here. Vagely spoilery, so read at your own risk. And yes, this really is a crossover.
Considering that Seward’s flat was located in the attic of an asylum for the insane, visitors of any sort were a rarity. Visitors who arrived pounding on the door before 10 a.m. were entirely unheard of. Yet here it was, a quarter ‘til, and Seward was hurriedly pulling his waistcoat and tie on as he raced to the door. It could be Art, he supposed. Lord Holmwood was the only person he could think of who would have reason to show up at this time of morning, but even that seemed rather odd. Seward finally got the last button of his waistcoat and opened the door.
Standing in the doorway was a man of about his own age with unruly shoulder-length hair, three-day stubble, a ratty hat, a long coat, and quite possibly the largest piece of weaponry Seward had ever seen in his life. The stranger spoke first.
“Well, looks like I found the right place. Jack Seward, right? Somehow I pictured you a little more organized. Never mind, I like fellows who aren’t too well groomed. They make me less nervous. Nice place; though the loonies downstairs strike me as a bit of a deterrent to company, you know.” The stranger pushed past Seward and plopped down in the only chair in the room not piled with books, taking off his ratty hat in the process. Seward recovered sufficiently to ask “And who are-”
“Oh, forgive me,” said the man, standing up and offering his hand. “I’m Gabriel, Gabriel Van Helsing. My uncle Abe said that if I was ever in England and not seeing my face on wanted posters I should look you up. He speaks very highly of you.”
“You’re the Professor’s brilliant nephew?” Seward said with a note of disbelief in his voice. Gabriel shrugged. “So we assume. There’s a long story involving amnesia, reincarnation, and vampires, but I really don’t think we need to get into all of that. Brilliant, eh? Don’t think I’ve ever heard that one before, doc.”
Seward decided right then at the mention of vampires that he wanted as little information as possible. That way if anyone asked, he could honestly say he knew nothing. Small talk seemed like a safe enough route. “So, what brings you to England?”
Gabriel shrugged. “Looking for a little vacation from the usual adventure. Uncle Abe and my friend Carl said they’d be heading out here soon to stay for about a week. Something about research Uncle’s doing; anyhow, I thought I’d surprise them, and since Uncle seems to like you so much, I figured you’d be my best bet for running into them.”
Research. Anytime Professor Van Helsing was doing research, there was cause for apprehension, Seward had learned. “Any idea what the Professor is researching?” he asked, leaning on the corner of his desk as nonchalantly as possible.
Gabriel tipped back in his chair and leaned it against the fireplace. “You never can tell with that old coot. Something about werewolves, I think.”
Seward’s hand slipped, and he barely recovered his balance in time to avoid falling to the floor. “Werewolves?” he said in a voice which sounded rather a few octaves too high. Gabriel nodded, raising an eyebrow. Seward ran a hand through his perpetually mussed hair. “Dear God, I hope he’s not planning on getting me involved.”
Another rap on the door interrupted them. Feeling rather sick to his stomach, Seward crossed the room and opened it. A red-haired monk carrying a stack of books and papers and hauling a bulging explorer’s pack stood there. “Oh, hello,” he said, peering at Seward around his parcels. “I don’t suppose you’d be Doctor John Seward?”
“I used to be,” said Seward miserably. The monk grinned. “Oh, wonderful. I’m Carl. I’m a new assistant to Professor Van Helsing, who should be here any mo-”
“Ah, John my good English friend!” interrupted a voice coming up the stairs which Seward knew well. “I have been hoping that soon we should again join our minds and use them to fight against the unnatural forces of this world, and now the time presents before us, yes?” Professor Abraham Van Helsing wrapped Seward in a friendly embrace before he and Carl dragged themselves into the room. “Ah, Gabriel!” exclaimed the delighted professor, “My nephew, I see you have already made acquaintance to my dear pupil and friend Doctor Seward. Now we may together all combine our knowledge to learn of these supernatural creatures.”
“Hold on,” said Seward. “I have a perfectly well-established career, a nice flat, and several hobbies to occupy my free time. I have finally rebuilt my life after it was completely uprooted by the appearance of a vampire next door. So please, give me one good reason I would want to go running around the country chasing not-so-mythical creatures with my old mentor, his bounty-hunter nephew, and a monk?”
“Actually, I’m only a friar,” said Carl. Seward thumped his head against the doorjamb. It was going to be a long week.
