went to go see Whatever Works last night. i thoroughly enjoyed it. classic woody allen without woody allen. larry david does a great job of becoming that classic allen character, but let's face it -- larry david can't wholly escape larry david. still, the character comes through easily, and you empathize with him from beginning to end. plus, there IS that part of you that went to go see the movie BECAUSE of larry david and that part is wholly satisfied, even though this movie is in no way a drawn-out episode of curb your enthusiasm. the story itself was a bit flat and a lot of the character development a bit two-dimensional. the main supporting character was great -- a total allen romanticism. the rest of the supporting characters were there mainly as background noise, really, but funny and delightful all the same. for an allen movie, there was an astounding lack of the schizophrenia we know and love him for. the movie developed at a moderate, if not slow, pace and wraps up at the end with a few fireworks in plot development, but all in all, it's a soft and easy pill to swallow, making it a totally feel-good (although not in any way lacking its allenesque nihilism) flick, leaving you with it's namesake as the only message to take from it... Whatever Works.

two beccie thumbs up. can't wait to add it to my DVD collection when it comes out. i have a feeling it'll be one of those "i have it memorized because i throw it on whenever i wanna watch a movie and can't decide what to watch" flicks.

oh and yeah, it's 6am and i've been awake since about 5... can't sleep. these unemployment hours i been keeping are totally screwy.
