Ok, so I am really pissed off right now, and am trying not to cry. Here's the story.
My Aunt Kris had this beautiful little Himalayan kitty cat that she bought at the vet for, like, $300. This cat was like a small puppy. She had long, fluffy fur and was quite the lover kitty. She would crawl onto your shoulder like a baby. Seemed like nothing made her happier than just cuddling on your shoulder and sleeping. I totally bonded with this cat the few times I was able to visit.
This summer brought flea and ticks to my aunt's pets. Duh. Cause that's what happens when you live in the middle of nowhere, or anywhere for that matter. So she goes to PetCo and asks what she can do. They hand her Hartz flea collars and spray. She goes home and puts them on her cats at the end of July.
Labor Day weekend, I went to visit. I was cuddling with Haze when I realized I could feel every single bone in her body, in a very unhealthy way. I was very concerned, and my aunt said that she would call the vet. A week later, she was able to get in.
Turns out, the Hartz products she was using had seeped into Haze's bloodstream and was poisoning her. It forced her liver to shut down, and Haze stopped eating for 5 weeks. Not only was the Hartz stuff poisoning her blood, but all the toxins her liver should have been dealing with were released into her blood as well. Plus, she was starving. For 5 weeks!
The vet put Haze on IV for a few days to try to flush the toxins out of her blood. This morning, they got the results of new tests and found out that there was no saving her. My aunt went in, spent about a half hour with her, and then held her as the vet put Haze to sleep.
I cannot believe that Hartz would continue to sell products like these on the market. The vet knew exactly what had happened because he sees cases like these EVERY SINGLE YEAR. These Hartz products are poisoning and killing peoples cats and dogs constantly, but they continue to produce and sell this stuff! Lawsuits don't even seem to be working. Supposedly, they are stopping production for their flea and tick drops in October, but that means this product will probably be on the shelves until March! This stuff is toxic to pets, and yet there is NO LABELING on the packages. I found the website
http://www.hartzvictims.org and found so many people who had either lost their pet or spent upwards of $700 trying to save their lives. The terrible stories of pet owners poisoning their own pets, putting them through organ failure, seizures, starvation and the like was incredible. How can anyone possibly work for this company?
I am so upset I don't know what to do. I'm a cat person and rather biased, I will admit, but I really did love that little kitty. And now she's dead.
done and done.
