I dont mind Obama is in office. I dont really care one way or the other. He is just another one of the same politicians like any of the others...and I hope I am wrong that he will pull off miracles but I am lacing bets as to...ummmm... NO ( Read more... )

Obama at least is far more intelligent and doesn't have the same shady history and neo-conservative attitude of his predecessor, so that gives us some cause for hope.

Will he pull off an (economic) miracle? Nope.. He seems to be following the conventional wisdom on this one (which is dead wrong) in throwing money at the problem, which is NOT the solution. He also seems to have tasted the "global warming kool-aid", though that's not a big surprise since he's only got so much time to study things, and probably trusts Al Gore.. but that may cost us a lot of money at a time when we can least afford it... (though, if done right, could reduce actual pollution (not CO2 which is not a pollutant) and get us moving towards energy independence. So, a depression and hyperinflation is coming, Obama or not.

I know what you mean about the inauguration, but I think it is an American thing, people (or at least enough people) want that sort of spectacle.. and so, what we had yesterday.. and that's probably ok, given the historic significance. Other countries it's different, but this IS the US after all :)

Wow, I can't believe how much of what you just said was exactly what I was going to say. We are Americans, and we always do things too big and too loud, but I think it was a happy day. Let people have their moment.

I might disagree about which things he is getting wrong, but I am sure there will be things that our new president does get wrong either because he is mistaken, or for political reasons. There is no way he is magically going to fix things. But he seems to be intelligent, somewhat practical, well meaning, and popular with people home and abroad. Can we really ask for more from the guy we elect to the job?

I will get tired of the fawning soon, but this being the country that it is, I bet they will move on the trashing something he has done (or not done) before the week is out. And perhaps by the end of the day.

*smiles* exactly!

He's a leader.. he's not God. If he persuades people to be optimistic again, that will do more for the situation than one might think.. then again, higher taxes are here to come (via the Alternative Minimum Tax when the dollar hyperinflates, if nothing else).

These next 4 years will be very interesting. I just hope Obama doesn't end up wearing the blame for it.

I'm just someone who is rather pessimistic about the economy at the moment :) Who are you?

Someone desperately trying not to be so pessimistic?

Sorry, just don't have a wide LJ circle, and hadn't "seen" you around before.

Hey, glad to hear Peter is up. Any way you could have him call me? (any time, work is slow now, damn economy!) I tried e-mailing him, but it might have got lost. We need to get the tickets soon if we are heading down at the end of Feb. and I would love to see where he is living, and get together for dinner or something.

I didn't need it either. I just wanted to see the swearing in and the speach afterwards, could have done without the rest.
