One of my co-workers is dead this morning. Probably a stroke leading to cardiac arrest. Pure speculation based on the very little information I have. I suppose it doesn't matter much though. Dead is dead. At age 40.
I started thinking about all the other people I've seen die/dead.
The drunk whose chest I pounded on on Thanksgiving morning years ago. The father of 3 we found blue in the face on his couch surrounded by family members. The countless elderly found dead at home or allowed to pass peacefully in the ER. The off duty police officer with his broken left arm dangling at an odd angle and blood oozing from several orifices in his head. The young 30-something dead in her bed for at least a day.
None of those hit home like this. I worked with her last night (slept through most of it actually). She was laughing with other nurses. She/we had an easy night last night. Fitting I suppose. Sadly, I can't even remember my last words to her.
Enjoy life. It's fleeting.
