45 books - 'The Monk' by Matthew Lewis

Okay, here we are nearly three weeks into January and I finally finish the first book out of my 45 book challenge! (headdesk). Yes, this is not good and I have to speed up. Anyway, what I read was:

'The Monk' by Matthew Lewis - a gothic novel written in 1796, yet still suprisingly readable. It has a complicated plot, so I will borrow a section of the blurb - "a violent tale of ambition, murder and incest" - sounds good, right? Basically it's about a monk and his fall from grace, with various romantic, gothic and horrific subplots. All in all, I would recommend it. It reads quite modern, and while it took me a while to get through it, (more to do with my lack of reading than the book itself being difficult) I'm glad I did.

Rating wise, I would probably say about 3.5/5.

So that brings me to my yearly count (because it is so difficult to keep track of at this stage) of: 1/45
