Second viewing impressions...

Mar 26, 2012 21:40

(Yeah, someday I'll stop posting about this movie.)

I went at 11:00 on Sunday morning, fully expecting a mostly empty theater, especially considering I live in the buckle of the Bible Belt. Wrong. A packed theater; I had to sit in the third row. :)

The movie held up, in fact was I dare say better, with the second viewing. Certain things that seemed rushed or glossed over to me on first viewing, like Katniss's relationships with Cinna and Rue, seemed to flow much more organically this time around. I took more notice of the music, which usually captured the tone of the scene perfectly - especially the theme they play at Rue's death and when Peeta and Katniss are about to eat the nightlock. More impressions:

-- Effie solemnly, fervently reciting along with the propo video. Three seconds, miles for characterization.
-- The way all the children back away from Prim after her name is called. :(
-- Prim tucking her hem in as she walks to the platform. I swear, I think the longest stretch I went without crying or wanting to cry was maybe ten minutes.
-- The way Katniss says "yes," when Effie asks if that was her sister: almost like she barely realizes she's saying it.
-- "That is MAHOGANY!"
--I revise my earlier statement about Josh not selling me until the interview scene: it's on the train, when he explodes "I have NO chance of winning!" The raw vulnerability, Peeta's pure frustration and fear there - ouch.
-- Gotta say, I kinda miss the lamb stew.
-- I don't know how I missed that Rue was the one who stole Cato's knife!
-- Katniss is so, so stunning in the chariot costume. Which is the point, really. And I love the music in this scene. Despite the true nature of the Games, you almost get swept into going "Fuck yeah District 12!"
-- I can't get over how perfect Jennifer Lawrence is as Katniss. The utter shaking like a rabbit as she's facing Cinna, about to go into the arena... you just want to take her in your arms and never let go.
-- Katniss and Foxface colliding, staring terrified at each other, then running from each other: great touch, showing how desperate each of them is to simply survive - not kill others.
-- While all the deaths disturb me, for some reason the one that makes me most physically sick is when I see Cato kill the boy from District 4 (the adorable little curly-haired one), and then the lifeless face of the girl from District 3.
-- The movie doesn't seem to hint at all that Peeta killed the girl from District 8 (the one who lit the campfire in the woods).
-- Haymitch sadly watching the Capitol children and their play-violence, oblivious to the true meaning of the same sort of violence that destroyed his own life.
-- Is it me, or were Cato and Glimmer all snuggly?
-- Why didn't Clove just throw knives at Katniss when she was climbing the tree? Was she almost out of knives? I forget if this was addressed in the book.
-- Haymitch's visible worry when Katniss is in pain in the tree. Awww.
-- Katniss hallucinating Caesar in the woods. Would almost be LOL if the rest of the scene - and movie - weren't such a psycho-mess.
-- Not my observation, but one I've seen more than once elsewhere: could the trackerjacker hallucination not only be about Mr. Everdeen's death, but foreshadowing the destruction of District 12?
-- Katniss's tears on Rue's forehead when she dies. :(
-- I don't know what made me cry more: Rue's death, or the salute and subsequent uprising from District 11. Was the man who started it Rue's father? That was the first thought that crossed my mind, though it's just as powerful - if not moreso - if it's simply a random District 11 citizen.
-- I originally thought Katniss's desire to save Peeta came too quickly after his perceived betrayal, but on the second viewing, it makes perfect sense after Rue's death: she's seen too much death already, she can't bear the thought of someone else she can't help but care about.
-- I need icons/wallpapers of the cave scene STAT.
-- I don't know how I misremembered the "you fed me" line so thoroughly; it makes so much more sense coming from Katniss!
-- The deliberately ambiguous "real or not real" nature of the Peeta/Katniss romance is much more apparent.
-- "I'll take the bow. Just kidding!" Oh, Peeta. :)
-- Did the Mutts, not Cato, kill Thresh?
-- Kind of disappointed the Mutts are just generic-looking dogs, but oh well.
-- I still can't entirely make out all of what Cato is saying on the Cornucopia. I gather the gist is about how he may as well die anyway, the only thing that matters is making his District proud?
-- Peeta touching Katniss's braid before the nightlock stunt... ♥
-- The end, with Snow watching Katniss back in District 12. *shiver*

I want to see this movie again, and again, although I know if I do, I'm going to end up fucking dehydrated from all the damn crying.
