~ Ever noticed that the potatoes you buy at the store are all about the same size? What happens to all the too-small potatoes and extra-big potatoes, which together make up to 50% of the crop? These are usually sorted out of the harvest as unfit for consumers!
~ Americans throw out about $75 billion worth of food every year. I think most of us can't even imagine how much that is.
~ More than 40% of food produced in America never gets eaten.
Meanwhile:
~ For much of the world, meat of any kind is only eaten for holiday meals. The rest of the time people subsist on rice, porridge, and similar vegetable dishes.
~ More than 9 million children under age 5 die every year, and malnutrition accounts for more than one-third of these deaths.
~ When's the last time you realized what an amazing blessing that faucet in the kitchen is? Roughly 12 percent of the world's population, or 884 million people, do not have access to safe water.
