Author’s Note: First finished fic. There’s a longer one coming, but it’s not cooperating, so I decided to get my feet wet with this one.
“Lizabeth, are you ready?”
Elizabeth glanced up from her laptop and frowned at John. “For what?”
Shaking his head at her, John said teasingly, “Dr. Weir, I’m shocked at you. We had a meeting scheduled for ten minutes ago.”
“We did?” Pulling up her schedule on the computer she answered her own question. “We did. I’m so sorry, just let me get my notes together and I’ll be right with you.”
“Oh, there’s no need for paperwork. It’s late so I thought we would just discuss in general some of the personnel we would like to see added to the expedition. We can get down to the nitty-gritty tomorrow.”
Sighing tiredly, Elizabeth said, “Sounds like a plan.” When John remained standing in the doorway she added, “You can come in, you know. I don’t bite.”
Grinning, he answered, “Well, that’s a matter of opinion. Actually, I thought a change of venue would do us both good. We’ve been cooped up here inside the mountain for a couple of days now. Let’s get out while we can.”
“I don’t know, John,” she grimaced. “There’s so much to do before we head back to Atlantis. Besides, it’s cold out tonight and I don’t have a coat here.”
“Gotcha covered,” he said. He held up two coats triumphantly which she realized belatedly he had been hiding out of her sight in the hallway. No wonder he hadn’t wanted to come in.
When she made no move to join him he decided to pull out the big guns. “I’ve got a surprise for you. Wouldn’t you like to see it?” he cajoled.
Narrowing her eyes at him, she asked, “Does it involve chocolate?”
“Well, maybe. But that would be telling. You just have to come with me and see.” Holding a coat open for her, he batted his eyelashes outrageously at her.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes and let him help her put the coat on. “This better be worth it.”
All through their elevator ride to the surface she pestered him with questions, but he refused to divulge anything.
“Elizabeth, I’ve been tortured by wraith. Give it up,” he said with a grin.
After he received a slap on the arm, he grinned even wider. Elizabeth leaned in the corner and pouted. “You’re no fun,” she said. He wiggled his eyebrows at her.
The elevator door opened and John gestured for Elizabeth to precede him. They signed out and walked outside into the cold, crisp, winter air of Colorado. Standing side by side, they simultaneously took deep breaths and then exchanged smiles.
“Over here,” John motioned with a jerk of his head and they began walking along the road. He turned off on a gravel road and Elizabeth said, “I’m pretty sure there aren’t any vending machines out here.”
“Vending machines?”
“You know, with candy bars?”
“Oh, but I’ve got something even better,” he said as he suddenly moved in front of her, forcing her to stop. “Close your eyes.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” When he just stared at her, she said, “Fine,” and closed her eyes with exaggerated care.
He took her hands in his and began walking backwards, leading her around the curve in the road. Elizabeth walked in silence knowing John wouldn’t tell her anything. The rat. She started focusing on the noises she could hear. Wood creaking. Something musical, a little tinny? Heavy breathing. Wait, heavy breathing? "John, is that a..."
She heard a whinny.
“Horse?” Opening her eyes, Elizabeth saw a brown horse standing by the side of the road hitched to a white sleigh.
She looked over to see John practically bouncing with excitement. “Isn’t this cool?” he asked. “Come on.” Grabbing her hand, he towed her over to where the horse and driver stood waiting. “Lizabeth, I’d like you to meet Mr. Walker.” The driver smiled and shook her hand.
“And this...” John said as he led Elizabeth to the horse, “is Chocolate.”
Elizabeth began giggling as she patted the horse. “Seriously?” She looked over at Mr. Walker who nodded in confirmation.
“Granddaughter named her,” he said. “So, are you two ready to go?”
“Go?” echoed Elizabeth. “Go where?”
“Over the river and through the woods,” answered John. “Or something like that. Are you game?”
Seeing the challenging glint in his eyes, Elizabeth said, “Absolutely.” She walked to the sleigh and let John help her step up into it. He climbed in after her and grabbing the blanket on the seat, threw it over their laps. With a slap of the reins the horse started off, the bells on his harness jingling merrily.
Seeing the smile on Elizabeth face, John asked, “So, what do you think?”
“I think you’re a bad influence, John Sheppard, and you know me too well. However, I do recall a promise of chocolate.” When he opened his mouth to reply she cut him off, saying, “No, the horse doesn’t count.”
John laughed and reached into his jacket pocket to pull out a Hershey bar. “Never say I renege on a promise.” He eyed the candy bar as she took the wrapper off. “Are you going to share?”
“Why should I?”
“Well, I did arrange this beautiful evening. Look at those stars!”
“Oh, so now you’re taking credit for putting stars in the sky? Wow.”
“Pfft. Not all of them. Just a couple.”
Elizabeth snickered. “Only two?”
John looked into her eyes. “All I needed.” Elizabeth forgot to breathe as she tried to read the emotion she saw in his eyes. After a long moment, he looked away. “Besides, if I hadn’t pulled you out of your office, you wouldn’t be here to see any of this.”
Blinking, Elizabeth exhaled slowly. “You’re right.” She handed him half of the candy bar which he took with a smug smile.
“Let’s talk about these personnel additions.”
Elizabeth looked at John in disbelief. “I thought the whole point of this was to get away from work!”
John shrugged. “Not really. I just wanted to get out of the SGC.”
“O.K.” She contemplated him for a moment, and then said, “Are we going to haggle?”
“Nope.”
“Why not?” she asked suspiciously.
“It just so happens I agree with the people you’ve picked. I’ll sign off on any of them.”
“John,” she sighed, “You’re taking the easy way out.”
“Guilty as charged,” he agreed. “Doesn’t change the fact you know what you’re doing. For the record, I did review all the files. There, meeting adjourned.”
Shaking her head at him, she reached down to tuck the blanket around her more securely.
“Cold?”
“Just a little,” she replied. “But it’s worth it. What a gorgeous night.”
The wind picked up and Elizabeth shivered, feeling an icy draft on her neck. John shifted closer, and then put his arm around her. When she glanced at him, he answered her unspoken question. “Body heat. First rule of survival in the cold.” She nodded in agreement, but looked away so he wouldn’t see her smile.
Leaning her head on his shoulder, she watched the night sky alight with its show of brilliant stars. The horse pulled the sleigh steadily onward, the bells providing a perfect accompaniment to the scene. Closing her eyes, she sighed contentedly.
John looked down at the woman resting against him. Tilting his head until he could see her face, he smiled to see her sleeping so peacefully. Carefully he leaned over to press a light kiss on her forehead, and then rested his cheek against her hair for a moment. He settled back and Elizabeth snuggled closer, her head now in the hollow of his neck.
Opening her eyes Elizabeth watched the scenery fly by, her eyes thoughtful.
