yaaaaaay elementary's back! i'm so fond of this show and i missed it a lot.
and what a good premier! it goes to show that elementary can still keep the characterisation balls up in the air, even after sherlock and joan have gotten to be fairly great friends. (also joan destroying that dude with the retractable stick! continuity!!!)
i really liked the introduction of lestrade and mycroft. lestrade i think functions better as a one-off character. i suspect he would be far more annoying on a regular basis, but he did serve to create some great parallels with sherlock and with the sherlock&gregson+bell dynamics in NY. the theme of making amends, with sherlock realising that he can only do so much, that lestrade's own problems can't be solved with sherlock's apology, were saddening but also very well explored. it also shows a lot of growth on sherlock's part: the fact that he can care, that he can worry about lestrade, was very sweet.
i also really liked the way they reimagined mycroft. elementary continues to delight me with how it introduces canonical characters. first, the dynamic with mycroft and joan was so incredibly delightful. i know the show probably won't ever go down a shippy route, but i definitely think lucy liu and rhys ifans have some great chemistry. (or maybe, lucy liu just has chemistry with EVERYONE.) maybe it's because they're both such essentially "mature" characters? like their worldviews match up pretty well and they seem really comfortable with each other on sight. idk, i really enjoyed their scenes. second, the interaction with sherlock and mycroft just had me face clutching with happiness. "fatty, this is watson. watson this is fatty" !!!!!!!!!!!! MY LOVE FOR THIS. and the fact that sherlock DOESN'T catch on the fact that mycroft's weight loss was because of illness just goes to show how his feelings disrupt his thinking re: mycroft. and the fact that mycroft is un-lazy enough to build the homemade bomb and destroy's sherlock's stuff just to get his attention. i wonder how much of sherlock's relationship with mycroft is ultimately a result of their respective paternal relationships. the fact that sherlock keeps saying mycroft is "lazy" seems to imply that he resents that mycroft hasn't made much of an effort toward him, much like their father presumably also failed to. whereas mycroft wants to, but had no idea how. awwwwwww.
also i'm totally not buying mycroft's "restaurateur" backstory. cashing out his trust fund and doing nothing but messing around in niche businesses and fancy cooking? that smells like a smart update of the "rich gentleman who is always at his club" that mycroft ostensibly was in canon. also sherlock mentioned his ruse "wasn't even a good one" at the end of the episode so ????? i'm intrigued.
