She's a survivor, that one | The Hunger Games

So my sister leant me her copy of The Hunger Games and I finally read it.

I intend to make major grabby hands for the next two books! I can't say I love it "more than everything ever" just yet (though I've certainly enjoyed it!) because I tend to judge things as a completionist; I want to read the whole trilogy before I decide. One of the things that surprised me was the first person narration. It threw me off when I first started, but then it felt entirely natural and didn't take me out of the story at all. That's unusual for me, as first person narration generally irritates me. But Katniss's personality and intelligence (and occasionally her more emotive thoughts) are really easy to read and sympathise with. I am, however, a tad frustrated by Katniss's refusal to meaningfully comprehend what Peeta's feelings mean (one of my biggest peeves in YA fiction is the 'oh but IDK how he really feels'). I know she probably doesn't want to have to deal with it all, because they've just survived etc and this raises some sticky, hard to answer questions, but it's just falm-palm-making!

Nevertheless, I'm definitely looking forward to the next book! Eeee. :D
