I'm very much a lurker too, these days, but I often send virtual hugs your way, just because. Can't say Twitter will recover or LJ will bounce back in popularity, but I can say you are awesome, now as ever.
Aw, virtual hugs right back at you. Yeah, I don't think either LJ or Twitter will ever be what they once were. The sad and annoying part is misplacing people during platform migrations. A couple of people end up over here, a couple over there, a few vanish completely. There's really no universal fandom platform any more and in the intervening decades I have forgotten what hard work it is making solid connections with new people.
I had that I had to change my password twice and gave in and went back to the app that I had abandoned after they suspended my public professional account. Never get in a fight with gun people :(. I'm also on Mastodon and I like it but if you don't that's ok. I"ve been unpaid on LJ for so long I forget all the things you can do paid. Blue sky is just as corrupt as Twitter and is run by Jack Dorsey and his chums so I won't go there
The biggest difference with paid and unpaid LJ is largely extra userpics and ad-free browsing without it giving you a shouty obnoxious popup telling you to turn off your adblocker. Mostly I had it to keep the adds away. There's extra media storage and stuff too but I never used it for that. Mostly it was ads.
I'm sure mastodon's fine and I'd figure it out once I got around to working out what server to pick. It's just so many seem to want to make some sort of statement about who you are, where you are, or what you like, and honestly I just don't want to. (I know, it's not that deep, just pick one, but it tweaks my executive dysfunction cause I'm kind of rubbish that way. Too many options with too many potential social connotations. I just want uniform obscurity!)

I followed an acquaintance on there so went with his and have stayed with it (octagon social) and then created a new account on mastodon social for my professional public cos I was feeling lazy lol. Though I really need to come off SM so much especially now I"ve gone back to FB and hate myself for it lol

You probably already know you can change your Mastodon instance very easily and take everything with you whenever you want but I completely understand.
