Dear Santa...

Note:This is an open letter to whoever is writing my requests for the second annual While We Tell of Yuletide Treasue: The Obscure Fandom Secret Santa Project. The rest of you can ignore it, or treat it as an amusing rant on my view of certain issues in FanFic. Whatever.

~~~
I've been a very naughty girl. But I think you'll agree it's for the better in a fanfic writer (who dabbles in slash).
I could give you a bunch of fandom-specific tips, but we were asked to avoid that sort of thing. Just follow the stuff I asked in "details" and you should be good.
My user-info page should give you a good idea of the sort of stuff I'm into, but I will add one very important point that I don't think comes across: I'm a genre feind.
What I mean by that is that I like my fan-fic to reflect the feel, tone, and mood of the source material. (I know, I know, well DUH!) Simply stated, there's nothing wrong with angst and drama in a fic based on a comedy (for example), especially if the comedy itself contains angst and drama, but it should be bittersweet agnst, that in the end you can laugh about.
...I'm not explaining myself terribly well here. I'm not saying that you have to have the same rating or Genre (as in, shelf in the video store) as the source, I'm just saying that... it should feel like the source materiel.
Or maybe that goes without saying.
Incidentally, this is why I cannot write, and rarely read Harry Potter stories with an R or higher rating originating from sex. I'm sory, but while love is everywhere in the underpinnings of the HP universe, sex is not, not in an immediate on-screen way. It clashes. This may change as J. K. starts writing a 16 and 17 year old Harry. But I'm waiting for her to set the tone.
Ah! I've got it!! Sports Night, as a series, never gets above a PG-13 rating, being a prime time TV series as it was. But there is a frequent presence of innuendo which means that R and even NC-17 are not beyond the scope of the series.
And when the fandom leands itself to it? I like my slash, and I like my het. But you knew that, because you've read my user info.
I apologize if this is more harmful than helpful to you, Santa. Especially since in the end, if you were confident to put a fandom on your sign in sheet, it probably means you have enough of an intuitive grasp of that fandom to not worry about this.
So... I'm a big pedantic ass. Wow, news flash. Oh well, I relish the opportunity to rant about a subject I enjoy in my fic journal.
Enjoy the milk and cookies, please make sure the Reindeer get no more than one sugar cube each, and thanks ever so much.
Holliday Wishes,
-L
