A Gift

Well, I have been gone for sometime. Our internet has been real screwy for the past 2 months, but I am hoping it is finally fixed. Upon my return I have a present for enn_enn. Just a little something for being a wonderful guy!

But before you read it remember a couple of things:
First and foremost I haven't had a beta go over it.
Second this is my first Logan/Marie fic.
Third this song just got in my head and wouldn't let go, So this is what it evolved into.

Disclaimer: The characters do not belong to me.

The song is Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss

She put him out like the burning end of a midnight cigarette

"Just get out Logan, there's nothing you can say to fix this! Just get the hell out of my life!”
Rogue picked up the remaining glass angel off the shelf, and hurled it at the man's head.
Just like everything else he had ever given her it too was now shattered into a million pieces, lying at his feet.

She had told him she loved him. He broke her heart out of fear and lust. His night of fear of emotions out of his control led to drunkenness, and that in turn led him into the arms of the resident red head.
He knew now what it had cost him wasn't worth it in the end.

She broke his heart he spent his whole life trying to forget

He looked for her everywhere imaginable after she left. He never found her, only distant memories of her.
He went on missions looking for the girl he lost, or death which ever he could find first.
Eventually he found himself stuck in his old nightmares trapped once again by the "scientists", but even that wasn't as bad as loosing her. Scooter and his pals rescued him, and he went back to the mansion. He had returned to his empty life; to her lonely bed surrounded by fallen angels.

Jean announced to him that the experiments left him without his ability to heal. "Good." was all he said and wondered back to her room.
He thought if he couldn't live this life with her he didn't want to live it at all, and death wasn't such a far cry away.

He found himself with a gun in his hand every night ready to leave this world. And every night he questioned whether she would be back tomorrow. Hope was the only thing that kept him from ending his life. Soon he wouldn’t even have that.

He discovered Storm and Cyclops knew where Marie was. He tried to beat it out of Scott, and charm it out of Storm. Nothing ever worked.
Scott told him that Marie never wanted to see him again. All hope was lost at those words.

"Just tell me she's okay." He finally said defeated.
"I assure you she is fine." Ororo finally told him.
He turned to leave, and face another night with his demon's alone.

We watched him drink his pain away
A little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength to get up off his knees

"I love you Marie." Logan stated to the night air around him, grasping a broken wing in one hand and a bottle in the other.

We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I’ll love her till
I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

Rogue looked up from the counter she was wiping down; when the bell above the diner's door rang loudly, announcing more patrons.
In walked memories not easily forgotten.
"Scott, 'Ro... How have you been?"
Rogue greeted pushing back thoughts of the man she left behind so long ago.

"Rogue my dear, there is something that we need to tell you."
The white haired goddess tried to lead the girl to a seat. "You might want to set down, Marie." Scott offered pulling up a stool. Rogue flinched at the usage of her given name. Scott had called her Marie many times, but she never could shove Logan's voice out of her head when she heard it.

"I'm fine. I'll stand." She didn’t want to see them. They just brought a past she was trying to forget with them. Scott was tired of drawing out the inevitable. "Marie, Logan died two nights ago. We found him in your room."

Scott started to stumble over his own thoughts when he saw the glimpse in her eyes of sorrow. Rogue swiftly shielded it with indifference. There were so many things he wanted to say to her, so many apologies for the way things had led to this. He just wanted to comfort her grief, but for so many years she just pushed them all away.

*Dead he was dead!* Rogue couldn't think, couldn't feel anything. She had been numb for so long, and now Logan was truly gone.
"He's buried on the grounds if you ever want to pay your respects. Here, he would've wanted you to have these."
Storm dangled Logan's dog tags in front of the girl. Rogue hesitated at first then reached out to take her last link to the man she would always love.

"Thank you." Rogue said weakly. She found that she couldn't breathe. She just wanted to get out of there, away from them, and run screaming in the streets for her loss, and her guilt. Her heart felt like it was breaking all over again. How could that be though, there was nothing left? He ripped it all out, all she had in her.

Rogue walked back to the counter calmly, and began cleaning once again. She was trying not to break and fall in front of them. Storm and Cyclops looked at one another in anguish. They knew she was hurting, but there was nothing they could do to help. She wouldn't allow it.

"I'll....ummmm...I'll be there in a few days..to say goodbye." Rogue said still not looking up. “We are here for you if you need anything.” Ororo called out as she made her way to the door. The pair looked to her again before they exited the diner.

The mansions inhabitants didn't expect to see her even if she had said she would come. But true to her word she showed up looking more tired and worn than they had ever seen her.

The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the
Whiskey on her breath

Everyone watched from windows, as Rogue stood beneath the willow, waiting for her hardened exterior to crack. He had first kissed her under that tree, and now he was laid to rest beneath the ground where she lingered. The tears were flowing from her eyes for the first time since the night she left. "Damn you Logan!" She screamed out at the top of her lungs; all out sobs making there way out of her constricted lungs.

"How did we get here? How did everything fall apart before it even began?" She fell to her knees in front of the head stone that read; “I'll love her till I die.” She wanted to laugh at the irony of the words. They were both dead a long time ago. All she remembered of her life was emptiness, dead....decaying....emptiness.

"I love you Logan." She said into the crisp spring air around her grasping the beloved tags in one hand, and a bottle in the other.

She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough
To get him off her mind
Until the night

She put that bottle to her head and pulled
The trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her
Knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the
Willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby

“At least they are together now Scott.” Ororo whispered putting her arm around the sadden leader, and lead him back to the mansion.
