Get to school on Thursday to be told there would be no third year elective. Instead, we would be teaching 1st and 2nd year. It get's to fourth period, we find out we *will* be teaching elective class. On the way *to* class I find out the principal had asked Fukushi-sensei what the English elective kids would be doing for the School Festival next month. The school festival skit I had asked her back in May about that she said she didn't think they were going to do.... I find out on September 13th, we're doing.
Well, that's not strictly, true. At first Fukushi-sensei was under the misconception that the kids were actually sing a song. Not just any song mind you, but "Do-Re-Me" from the sound of music. I was cringing when I thought she just wanted to practice it for a filler class period. When I found out she actually wanted to *DO* it for the School Festival... well, I got a little weak in the knees. Yuhara-sensei must have felt a little the same way, because she came to me to fill me in on everything. It's a bit nice being the English seniority.
It took us all period, but the kids were pretty adament about want to do a well-known play. We quickly narrowed down our options to two. I should mention at this point that there are only 32 students in the third year, nine of which are in English Elective (that's out of five options, btw). There are 7 girls and 2 boys. Fukushi-sensei and I were really rooting with the boys. I think "Star Wars" would've been a most excellent and terrifically fun play to script. But, alas, the girls won---even to the point where they first got one of the boys to play "Romeo"... and then had him switched, by the end of the day, mind you, to "Juliet".
My lovely third year students, who "don't speak English so good", are doing "Romeo and Juliet". Well, one things for certain, I'll never grow up to be a professional screenplay writer!
