Two Words
Miranda knew she had no right to be there, standing in the shadows, watching the young woman slowly walking down the aisle on the site of her father.
The snow white dress was a dream, a Vera Wang, simple and elegant, like the flowers of her bridal bouquet, white Calla Lilies.
She’s an angel. Miranda thought and leans behind the entrance, Andrea already far away out of reach.
Silly girl. She will never know. It was the best for her; the young man waiting, someone who will take care of her, what Miranda could not do.
It was raining again, just on the day she left, angry, hurt, disappointed. It was the best for her.
Before Miranda could avoided, felt tears welling up in her eyes.
I should go she said to herself, but took one last look at the beautiful bride, a bride that would never be hers. She did not say farewell that evening long ago, but she said it now, before she put on her sunglasses. “Farewell, Andrea.”
With that she left.
I do… I do….. I do….. So simple words, with such a life changing meaning. Everyone in the church stood up, with happy faces, whispering compliments when Andy walked past them. “Such a beautiful bride.”
She looked to transparent bridal veil. He was waiting for her, smiling bright and proud. A good man, after Nate has moved to Boston, the best she could dream of. It was all perfect, except for the rain. Andy tried to smile, to forget everything, especially that stupid card she received a week ago. She wanted to forget her, she had to.
Andy just had to say these two words “I do” and everything was alright.
Here were her friends, her family, everyone she loved but…. She could not help it. Something was just wrong, was missing and then she felt a strange presence. She turned her head.
All she could see was a flash of hair before leaving the church, but it was enough to make her eyes widen. A flash of white hair. She was here.
Suddenly she felt like her legs were turned into jelly. She stopped.
“Andy…. Is something wrong?” Richard Sachs asked his daughter.
No…. It could not be. It was not her. It simply… Could not be! Her inner voice screamed inside her. But Andy just shook her head.
“No, I’m fine, dad.” She whispered and started to walk again.
I’m doing it. You hear me, Miranda? I WILL FUCKING DO IT!
Andy nearly stomped on her way to the altar. The older women will NOT destroy her day. She will marry David, a good guy, because she…
What? Love him? Do you, Andy? She did not like that amused tone in her inner voice. It was her voice, but it sounded just like Miranda’s.
He is the best for me. She said to herself in a low tone that denies any contradiction.
When they arrived her father gave his daughter’s hand to David. His hands were nice and warm, but it was still something missing.
The priest began with the ceremony. Andy stood beside David, still holding his hands, pleading inside her to all of the above.
I do… I do… I do… Just say it!
She tried to listen to the sermon, but closed her eyes.
The image of what she’d just seen for only a second flowed through her mind. Miranda was there. For only a moment. She send her the card just one week ago und she dared to come to the church. Must have got the address from Nigel or Emily.
Andy did not saw only her hair flowing, she saw a part of her face. The white haired woman was…. Crying. Yes, it was unbelievable, but Andy had eyes like an eagle, she was sure to see wetness coming from Miranda’s eyes, before she’s put on her giant sun glasses. On a rainy day.
Andy opened her eyes again. David smiled widely and squeezed her hand. It was all her wish, to get married as fast as they could, a small ceremony with family and friends…. to forget her.
Two simple words…
David was asked first; if he wanted to take Andy as his wife, loving and cheering her, taking care and stand by her side for better for worse. And without any hesitation he said “I do.”
Andy was asked the same question, she stared at her hand David was holding and knew what was missing. She could not deny it any longer.
Everything was quiet when Andy had to give the answer. Deadly quiet.
She lifted her veil and looked at David with wide open eyes. And then he knew.
“I….. I…..” She said the words he’d never wanted to hear, almost a whisper. He let go of her hand and Andy turned away.
Her parents and closest friends were shocked when she walked away from the altar, down the aisle again, the bridal bouquet dropped on the floor.
“But Andy!” her father said in disbelief and her mother nearly passed out.
She stopped but didn’t turn around. She looked over the shocked guests and found the face she’d hoped to find and went to him, a bold man with thick glasses, smiling at Andy.
He stood up, reached out and took her hand. “Go get her, six.”
For the first time this day her smile was real and bright like the sun. She nodded, pulled back her hand, grabbed her dress and ran.
When they saw the last bit of the white dress leaving the church the huge uproar broke out.
“Did you just see this? How could she do that?” people talked excited, heads shaking in disbelieve and Richard tried to wake up his wife again.
People, including the priest were talking angry with each other. The only one who was still standing on his spot at the altar was David. He was frozen, staring on his now empty hand.
The truthful look in Andy’s eyes was too much and her words were still echoing in his head.
I can’t…
