Miranda was already waiting in her car. Roy opened the door for Andy to entry.
“Thank you, Roy.” She said smiling widely at him, he just nodded, but smiled back at her.
So this was it, her last ride in the expensive Mercedes Benz. With Miranda.
The older woman didn’t look at her and said anything during the whole ride. Andy did not even dare to make an attempt of a last conversation, so she remained silent.
She will go home, into her house, not even saying So long or whatever. Only “That’s all”, as always. Roy brings me to my empty apartment and that was it.
It was getting dark quickly and little drops of rain started to fall on the window.
The more they were reaching Miranda’s townhouse, the more Andy’s heart sank and she was getting anxious. The car parked near the entrance and Roy got up to open Miranda’s door and handed her an umbrella.
Remaining silent Miranda got out of the car. Andy didn’t know how long the fashion editor stood there, but then she turned her face to Andy.
“What are you waiting for? Come in with me.”
Andy’s jaw nearly hit the floor. “You… you mean…”
“I don’t like to repeat myself.”
Andy closed her mouth and swallowed. “Yes, Miranda.”
She grabbed her bag and suddenly froze. Did she felt a slight movement?
But when she wanted to check her bag, she sensed Miranda’s glare on her, quickly forgot what she thought she would feel and went after her.
Roy opened the front door. “I do not need you tonight anymore, Roy. I call you tomorrow morning when to pick me up. That’s all.”
Roy looked as surprised as Andy but just said: I understand. Good Night, Miranda.”
He gave a last nod at Andy and got back to his car, seeing the journalist winking.
“Good luck, Andy.” He mouthed to her. “Thank you.” She mouthed back.
With that he drove away.
Meanwhile Miranda stood in her entrance hall. “Andréa, please come in. It’s raining outside and I don’t want you to drench my floor.”
“Yes Miranda.” Andy carefully closed the door. Her heart was racing in her chest, faster than ever.
What did Miranda expect her to do? She has given the keys to Emily already and the first assistant will deliver the book and dry cleaning soon, so Andy really didn’t know why she was here.
She nearly jumped away when Miranda held out a hand.
“Your coat, Andrea.”
She stared at the hold out hand for a minute, but then slowly got out of her coat and her arm slightly trembled when she handed it to Miranda, careful not to touch the editor at all.
Miranda hung the coat into the closet and closed the door.
“See, I am still able to hang coats myself” she said dryly.
Andy swallowed. “Yes… I’m sorry, it was just…”
She placed her handbag on the floor. Just in that moment the back toppled down and a dark ball of fur rolled on the carpet.
“Oh my….” Andy’s face went all white. The kitten!
How the hell did it get into my bag? I was only talking to Nigel for bit and then…
Miranda just stared at the fluffy kitten that began to stretch itself and started sniffling around.
“Andrea, what…”
“I swear I didn’t know how she got into my bag, Miranda!” The brunette said, her eyes already in tears. The last thing she wanted Miranda could EVER take her for a thief.
To her surprise Miranda picked her cellphone and dialed.
“Nigel, are you still there at the shoot? Yes, good… Is there any chance that the brown kitten is missing again?..... It is? Well, search no more, I found it….. Nigel, I don’t want you to bore me with your questions. Send someone to pick it up tomorrow at my house. I’ll tell you when. That’s all.”
With that she ended the call as always.
She looked at Andy, who just stared at her like she was an alien.
“Mi-Miranda…”
“Well, that’s unexpected.” Miranda only replied. She walked to the kitten and gently picked it up. “Such a troublemaker.” She couldn’t help but smiled softly.
Andy felt like she was near to pass out.
Miranda Priestly did not freak out? Where was she? Twilight Zone?
“We should talk furthermore in the living room. Please dry your eyes and come, Andréa.”
Silently the young woman dried her eyes with a tissue and followed the older woman into the living room.
“Take a seat, please. I will be right back.”
She placed the kitten on a sofa and went into the kitchen.
A very long moment Andy could not do anything else then watch the kitten rolling around the soft sofa, playing with one of the expensive pillows. Andy bit her lip.
She was to anxious to move, she did not even checked if her hand bag was dry. She hoped for the best, that her environment wasn’t ruined.
Miranda got back from the kitchen, caring a small plate with some little portion of flesh and a little bowl of water.
She put it on the floor and took the cat off the sofa on the ground.
The kitten sniffled carefully at the foot in front of it but then began to eat quite eagerly.
Miranda chuckled and got up to take a seat across from Andy.
“Surprised that I’m actually human?” the editor asked. Andy blushed.
“Well… I mean….” Then she sighed. “Yes, I am. I mean, I know that you are human, but…”
“I hardly behave like one. I know, Andréa, that’s my job. I know all my nicknames and I know you did not expect me to behave like I do now.”
Andy only blushed harder and could only nod.
“This is your last day. Your year is completed. I think it’s the time I congratulate you for ‘surviving’ the Dragon Lady.”
Andy wanted to protest but Miranda stopped her. “Believe me, I know what it means. I was also young once.” She shook her head. “I know you would not have the courage to face me a last time. You were close to leave me in Paris, but then…” She froze for a moment. She did not know what to say anymore.
It was Andy who finally broke the silence. “I’ve learned much. I know I was naïve at the beginning, maybe I’m still now, but…. I don’t regret it.”
Miranda nodded. She stood up and poured two glasses of wine, handing one to Andy.
“Thank you.” The brunette mumbled. Clung to Miranda’s glass without any spoken word and then both took a sip. The kitten was lapping some water.
Andy watched it again. “Why didn’t you… freak out?” She finally dared to ask.
You never ask Miranda ANYTHING!.... Shut up, Emily.” She thought.
Miranda chuckled. “Because of the kitten? I’ve experienced much worse.
She’s going to be picked up tomorrow. I have two children, two teenagers mind you. I can handle a kitten quite well.”
Andy took another sip. “Are the girls here?”
“No, they are at their father this weekend.” Miranda replied and Andy mentioned a little sad tone in her voice. She might be a dragon, but she really cared and loved her daughters.
Suddenly she had to think of the canine Priestly member and that she might not like cats in her house.
“Pa…Patricia?”
“The girls took her with them. She’s a St. Bernard. She is big and a bit clumsy, but even if she was here, she would not care about the kitten much.”
“Good to know…”
Miranda smiled just for herself.
Loud thunder broke the upcoming silence and also the sound of rain was getting louder.
“Oh dear!” Andy said. “I think I…. should call a cab now….”
Miranda waved her hand. “Nonsense. I can’t leave you out in a whether like this. You can stay in one of the guest rooms.”
Andy stared at her in disbelief. Was that really the same woman that demanded a plane to fly her home during a hurricane not long ago? Did she…. “care” for Andy’s health or security all of a sudden?
“I… I… Thank you. “ Was all she was able to say right now. The kitten has finished the food and was playing at her feet. “What about the kitten?”
“Well, I still need to go through the Book, so you better take care of it.”
Andy smiled warmly and picked the kitten up, stroking the fluffy fur. “With delight… ah, that tickles!” She chuckled as the kitten licked her fingers with her little rough tongue.
Miranda watched the scene for a moment and a warm fluffy feeling began to overtake her body and filled her heart with sadness at the same time.
She cleared her throat. “So, it’s late Andréa. I will settle the guestroom.”
“Yes Miranda” the young brunette replied and watch the editor going away.
With that she sank back onto the sofa.
“Oh dear god. A night in Miranda’s house… in one of her bedrooms…” She looked at the kitten. “I’m not sure how to survive that… What did you gotten me into you…. Sweet little devil?”
The evening was already strange, so how would the night be?
Andy’s odd instinct told her something was going to change….
To Andy’s horror it appeared she was really alone with Miranda. And the kitten of course. But no housekeeper or nanny….
Miranda really made everything herself. It was hard for Andy to imagine, but Miranda was a human being, a normal woman and mom like everyone else. Just wealthy, famous and an complete other human in her job.
Miranda even had improved a cat litter for the small kitten in the guestroom. Andy was speechless.
In her mind she actually has always imagined Miranda as a cat lover, so she was deeply surprised Miranda had this huge dog.
“You’ll find what you need in the guestroom. I’m upstairs, as you know.
I’ll wake you in the morning.”
Andy nodded. “Yes… thank you Miranda. For… everything…”
“Well yes…. It’s late. So… Good Night.”
“Andy smiled. “Yes, Good Night, Miranda.”
The editor just nodded and got out of the room to prevent the young woman seeing her blushing slightly.
Andy heard her walking the stars to her master’s bedroom.
“So, it’s just you and me, Sweetie.” She smiled to the kitten and carefully closed the door.
With a company like her, Andy was hopeful not to think to much of the white haired woman sleeping not far away from her.
She changed into a large T-Shirt Miranda has given to her ad what must have been a T-Shirt of one of Miranda’s previous husbands. Hopefully not Stephen’s, but all in all Andy didn’t mind. They were history now, nevertheless.
She brushed her teeth and to her own surprise she found the kitten using her cat toilet on her own.
She quietly clapped her hands. “Ah, you’re so smart! And so pretty. “
A name suddenly got into her head out of a sudden.
“Scarlett…. Yes, that would be the perfect name for you. I’d really liked to keep you….”
She said with sadness in her voice. Her eyes got teary again, but before the tears fell she dried them off with her hands.
“I’m so stupid…. Don’t know what’s wrong with me….”
She just laid on the bed, closed her eyes and fell asleep immediately.
When she awoke by the sound of a loud thunder strike again, she glanced at her watch: two p.m.
“Oh great….” She said. It was still raining outside. Will that storm ever calm down?
She sat up on the bed and looked around. Two things were noticed quickly: the door was open and the kitten was gone.
She jumped off the bed. “Oh no… no no no no no, please NO!” she panicked.
Where was the kitten?
“Scarlett?” she whispered quietly.
Not that she really thought a cat would hear of a name she has just given her, but it was better than nothing.
She searched everywhere in the guestroom, even looked under the bed and more than ten times in the basket Miranda has given the kitten to sleep in, before she sighed and tapped out of the room.
The house was dark and huge. She searched for the kitten everywhere but could not find it. It was not in the entrance hall or somewhere else. Most every door was closed.
Andy was really getting anxious, the lightening light showed her the stairs.
No, it could not be. The small kitten could not have been able to take the stairs to go…. Upstairs.
Andy swallowed. She had no choice. As quiet as she could she went upstairs, whispering the kitten’s name.
“Scarlett…. Please, where are you?”
