There's quite a collection of actresses claimed to be "the next Meryl Streep", like Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet or as the newest, Jessica Chastain.
I don't have anything against these actresses. They're all unique of their own.
So the question is, why should anybody want them to become "the next Meryl Streep"?
What does that even mean? Her legacy? Her nomination record? Her career?
Fact is, Meryl, as we all know it, has the most Academy Award nominations with overall 17 (14 for best actress and 3 for best supporting actress) plus 3 wins, 27 Golden Globe noms plus 8 wins, 2 SAG awards, 2 BAFTA Awards, 5 NYFCC Awards and countless other awards.
Can this overall number of INSANE 215 (!!!) award nominations ever being topped?
Well, never say "never", but I doubt it will happen as long as she's alive.
Her legacy is different than most actresses working today. She was way over 25 when she starred in a movie feature for about only a minute in the film "Julia" in 1977. Only a year later she got her first "big" (supporting) role in "The Deer Hunter", a best picture winner and her first supporting actress nom at Oscars that year. We all know what happened then over the years. She won two Oscars very early in her career, was nominated and nominated years after years without a chance of winning until she finally got a third Oscar and her second in best actress this year.
But there are several complains about her, too. Her fimography is "full of medicore to bad movies no one will remember".
Not my words, but that's what I have to read in different forums nearly every months.
Funny thing is, as "bad" as they seem to be, most people actually remember in what movies Meryl starred in, including "awful movies" like Mamma Mia! or The Iron Lady.
Reminds me of a scene in "Pirates of the Caribbean-The Curse of the Black Pearl":
James Norrington:"You are by far the worst pirate I've ever heard from."
Jack Sparrow: "But you DID hear from me!"
So there's that.
Meryl mostly stars in "awful" movies.
Do we really want other "precious" actresses go the way she did?
Lawd, no!
Actresses all over the world: Do not want to be the next Meryl Streep!
You don't want to star only in "medicore to awful" movies, don't you? oO
What? Yeah... that's true.... These "awful" movies did make some "awful" lot of money and got her an "awful" lot of award nominations and wins the last 10 years. How awful!!!
No really, I'm just sick of this stupid question. There is no answer, because Meryl will always be Meryl, Cate Blanchett always Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet always Kate Winslet and Jessica Chastain will always be just Jessica Chastain.
And that people, is all.
(just to remind: any words I've put in "" is of course to be meant sarcastic ;))
