Title: A Pirate's Life
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Summary: "Perhaps, if she found herself chained by marriage to a close-minded, proper Navy man, a swashbuckling pirate would come to her rescue." Pre-CotBP. Elizabeth's young fascination with pirates and her fantasies about being swept off of her feet.
Rating: G
Pairings/Characters: Elizabeth centric, hints at Jack/Elizabeth or Will/Elizabeth (if you consider Will a real pirate...)
Length: 450 words
Genres: character study, romance
A/N: I watched Curse of the Black Pearl again the other day and got to thinking about young Elizabeth's fascination with pirates and how it's played out and come to pass across the rest of the movies. And this just sort of made sense to me: the way she would see pirates, the way she might fantasize about them. Read and enjoy. :)

Pirates. The thought brought chills to her spine.

But swashbucklers sailing the open seas looting and pillaging were not appropriate fascinations for a proper young lady of her upbringing. She couldn’t help it, though, if she was fascinated by something so “roguish.” It was not her fault that she had been born a proper English lady and not a common sailorwoman.

But no, she was a governor’s daughter, born with expectations and born into a web of very specific noble thinking.

She was expected to think of pirates as savage, terrible, dirty outlaws who pillaged, ransacked, and burned because they knew nothing more intelligent to do. But she didn’t think what she was supposed to. She herself saw the life of a pirate in a cleaner, different light. To her, pirates were sailors with wanderlust in their blood and the sea in their hearts. They lived the way they did because they needed to sail and did what they must to stay free and sailing.

Life as a pirate was simply life on the open sea without the oppressive regulations of the Royal Navy.

The thought always made her sigh wistfully. Many days, a life like that appealed to her. It was freedom. Freedom from the trappings of normal society. Real, wide-open freedom on the open, never-ending, unconquerable oceans.

But she was doomed by birthright to never truly taste that freedom she dreamed of.

It was more than likely that her passage from England to Port Royal in the New World would be her only sea voyage ever.

But maybe, she would at least marry a good Navy man someday. She would of course ensure that he was an open-minded one, perhaps even open-minded enough to allow her to sail with him. The odds of that happening were slim, she knew, but she would hope stubbornly until it came to pass.

And perhaps, if she found herself chained by marriage to a close-minded, proper Navy man, a swashbuckling pirate would come to her “rescue.” It would be scandalous - even the mere thought was scandalous! - and it would break a few hearts, but this pirate would come along and completely sweep her off her feet. She would fall in love with this pirate, and she’d sail away into the sunset with him.

She knew the fantasy was highly improper and indecent, but it would happen one day.

She knew it would.
