Last call for football. . .

After a year and a half at Notre Dame without seeing any ND Football players around on campus (at least, that I've recognized), I ran into Brady Quinn yesterday.

Not that he would know me from Adam (or Eve). I was walking near O'Shag and saw this kid crossing diagonally in front of me, holding his cell phone next to his ear with one hand and carrying his lunch with the other, and thought to myself, "Wow, that kid looks a lot like Brady Quinn," forgetting, momentarily, that I was at Notre Dame. Remembering myself and getting closer, I thought, "Wow, that probably is Brady Quinn." Then I stepped off the curb and suddenly the kid got about six inches taller, and I realized, too, how wide he was, and then I thought, "Oh yeah. I guess that is Brady Quinn."

If it had been Jeff Samardzija I probably would've had a different (i.e., more enthusiastic) reaction, but Brady's never captured my football-loving heart. Later, when I told Chris about my little encounter, he asked me, "Did you happen to ask him why, when his team is on third down, he consistenly decides to throw the ball to - no one?"

I laughed. "Or to the other team?" I replied.

No. I didn't ask him. Poor Brady. He's come a long way from last year, but I do admit I was rather shocked that he was even in the top five running for the Heisman. Ah well. Seeing him on campus was a nice little rouse before my final dip into sports slumber until football season starts again. Until then. . .
