Brief Update

May 31, 2006 14:54

- May 21st, 1-4pm: I graduated from Notre Dame!

- May 21st, 9pm - May 22nd, 3am: A moving company was supposed to come on May 22nd to move me to New York, so I spent the entire night finishing up my packing. Kicked up a lot of dust, which exacerbated my allergies.

- May 22nd, 11am: Moving company, which was supposed to arrive first thing in the morning, had not yet shown up. Allergies had given me a sore throat. I called moving company, who told me that they were "just about to call" and let me know that they were not going to make it out that day and didn't know when they could make it. The contract I signed said that pick-up should take place between May 22 and May 23, so even though I was pissed, I figured I could spend an extra day in the apartment.

- May 22nd, 8pm - 11pm: Watched the Spurs lose in Game 7 to the Mavericks. {sigh} Allergies have turned into full-blown sinus infection. Now I feel wretched.

- May 23rd, 9am - 5pm: Spent the day on the phone with the moving company, which still didn't know when they could come to get me. Had male friend call, then had father-in-law call. Did research on moving company scams and began to think that I had been scammed. Now I just wanted out of the deal. Moving company said that if they hadn't come by the end of the day, per our contract, I could cancel and have my deposit back. Spent a lot of time crying, which only made my sinuses worse.

- May 23rd, 11:00am: Got a call from Sr. Joan, principal at Dominican Academy - the school I really want to work out. She tells me that they can almost certainly hire me for next year and that the union woes are almost past! I'm thrilled at this much-needed piece of good news.

- May 23rd, 3:30pm: Went to my apartment complex's leasing office and extended my lease until June 16.

- May 23rd, 9:00pm: Knew I had to be in New York by Friday for a job interview, so I booked plane tickets for Thursday, May 25. My parents also wanted me to come home for a little while afterwards, so I booked tickets to Atlanta too. The new moving plan: cancel with old company, go to Atlanta, come back to South Bend with parents, rent a truck, and move ourselves.

- May 24th, 9:00am: Spoke to moving company, who said they had someone who could come get me that day. Told them thanks, but no thanks, and cancelled. Was told I would get a refund in 5-7 business days.

- May 24th, 7:00pm - 4:00am: Hung out with my friends for my last night in South Bend.

- May 25th, 8:00am: Hopped a bus to Chicago Midway Airport and flew to Newark.

- May 25th, 4:00pm: Upon arrival in New York, I realize that the airline has lost my luggage. Can't believe my wretched luck and break down in front of the agent. I think I scared him a little bit. Filled out paperwork and headed to the Amtrak station.

- May 25th, 4:30pm: Amtrak had had a massive power outage that morning, so the trains were all behind schedule. Finally get on a train and reach New York Penn Station at rush hour.

- May 25th, 5:00pm: Arrive in New York Penn Station; take the subway home. Introduce myself to the doorman and go into our new apartment (!).

- May 25th, 8:30pm: No word yet about luggage. I am in no mood to be messed around with or forgotten, so I leave messages for everyone and their grandmother in the hopes that annoying them will get them to work harder to find my stuff.

- May 26th, 7:00am: Day of interview at Fordham. Go to Rite Aid to get pantyhose and makeup so that I don't look like a complete slob. Thankfully Chris already had my suit with him, so I had something to wear.

- May 26th, 11:00am: Interview at Fordham's Campus Ministry. Lovely campus; small. Met Mark Massa, whom I hope I can work with no matter what happens next semester. Fr. Currie was very kind. The office seems like a lovely place to work.

- May 26th, 2:00pm: Wearing Chris' clothes, I start doing laundry so that I can wash the clothes I had been wearing, as I had no other clothes with me.

- May 26th, 5:00pm: Still no word about luggage. Chris and I prepare to go to Long Island, where we will spend the night before heading to Ithaca for Chris' brother's graduation from Cornell.

- May 26th, 6:00pm: Get phone call saying luggage has been found! and will be delivered either that night or the next morning. Change delivery address to Long Island address. Am worried that luggage won't get to us before we have to head to Cornell.

- May 27th, 7:00am: Call AirTran to check on luggage status; delivery room doesn't open until 9:00am. Am afraid that luggage won't arrive until 10:30am at earliest. Chris goes out for haircut; I take shower and get ready to go.

- May 27th, 8:00am: Because I'm in the shower, I don't hear my phone ringing. I get out of shower and hear someone banging on front door. I scream, "COMING! JUST A MINUTE!" and throw on some clothes (the same clothes, by the way, that I had washed the day earlier because they were my only set of clothes). Open the door to see Chris, who had just arrived back from the barber, helping an AirTran person get my bag out of his van. Finally, I have new clothes!

- May 27th, 8:30am: Change into new clothes and load up the car for Ithaca!

- May 27th, 1:30pm - May 29th, 1:30pm: Hung out at Cornell for Mark's graduation. Had a great time, enjoyed seeing Cornell, and got lots of good exercise climbing those hills!

- May 29th, 2:00pm: Realize I left my tennis shoes in Chris' mother's car. There go my plans to go for a run! I hadn't been running for a little over a week, and I felt flabby and bloated. Blech.

- May 30th, 11:00am: Receive a call from Fordham. I got the job! Only it pays less than Dominican does, plus it's a farther and much more expensive commute. Have until June 25th to decide, by which time hopefully I'll know for sure if Dominican can offer me the contract (although it still looks very likely, according to Sr. Joan). Job hunting is so difficult!

- May 30th, 1:00pm: Visited a gym in New York, Asphalt Green. Absolutely beautiful. Light, breezy, cool, airy, overlooking the East River. Considering joining. . .

- May 31st, 1:00pm: Finally get tennis shoes via FedEx. Take them out and immediately head to Central Park for a run. Already feel 100% better.

I leave tomorrow for Atlanta, where I'll be until June 7. Then it's back to South Bend for a few days, with a trip to Chicago in the works. Then we're packing up on June 12th and heading back here on the 13th, and I'll officially (finally) be a New Yorker. Poor Chris! He's living here with a card table as a dining table, a papasan chair, a 13" TV, and an air mattress as his only furniture! He does have a nice desk, though. :) And we have digital cable and wireless internet access - I'm surprised at how (relatively) inexpensive it is. When we have all the furniture here, we'll be set!
