In The Dark: Chapter 3; And His Name Is…
“Damn! These cookies are good!” A man was patiently eating and enjoying the small batch of cookies that his fiancé had made for him. Along with a tall glass of milk he took his cookies and brought them into the master bedroom’s bathroom. Sitting himself on a small shower stool next to the elegant, Jacuzzi tub he put the plate of cookies and glass of milk on the counter. “Want a cookie?”
Next to him, hanging above the tub was a woman, her eyes blood shot, tears streaming vastly down her painfully red cheeks. Her trashing had stopped minutes ago, and the only answer she gave to the chocolate chip cookie hovering in front of her face was a long, drawn out whimper.
“What? No cookie? But they’re super delicious. Come on.” The woman only whimpered once more, a fresh pint of tears running out of her eyes. Her face was red, gravity letting all the blood in her body rush to her face, making her temples pound with every beat of her weakening heart. She was tied up at the ankles from the ceiling. Her arms were tied to the sides of the tub at an angle, making it easier for her blood to drain out through the three cuts on her wrists. Her body was completely naked, showing off her beautiful curves while her lengthy, jet black hair flowed over her slim, elegant shoulders.
“Right, whatever. Don’t have the cookie!!” The man started muttering and munching on his insulted cookie. “Fucking whores… Always on diets and crap.” He turned his eyes up to the hanging woman. “You know what?! Diets aren’t gonna do you any good! You’re still just a whore. But don’t worry. This will clean your soul. You will be a pure maiden once more. We just need to get rid of all your dirty blood.” He said, perfectly convinced of his own words. It was as if the man were talking about a simple facial peeling, when in fact he was slowly draining the life out of his victim.
Somewhere inside his twisted mind, this man conceived the idea that he was on a mission. His purpose in life was to clean the souls of whores and prostitutes. “You should be thankful to me. And stop crying, sheesh. You don’t want to have puffy eyes when you meet God do you?” The man asked as he lifted the young woman’s face up by her chin. She had no more strength left to fight. Even her eyes seemed to have given up all will to move. Small little moans and groans came from somewhere in her throat.
Suddenly her body began trashing again; her eyes were shut close as if she was in deep pain. And she was. With a rapid loss of massive amounts of blood her blood pressure wouldn’t be sufficient, consequently resulting in a severe heart attack or a stroke. Judging from the way she tried to move her arms up to her chest it wasn’t hard to see which one was happening at the moment. It was the man’s favorite. When his victims met their end with a heart attack, it was beautiful. It was like the last cry of a wretched, tainted soul, as it made its passage into purity and everlasting life beyond the gates of death.

In another part of town Jaejoong and Changmin were hanging out together in a little ‘date’ during a free night. It was a Sunday night, Jaejoong had just left his lovely daughter with her mother and neither of the two had much to do. Jaejoong had called the detective on his way home and invited him out to have a casual dinner. The exotic dancer was the one to pick the detective up from his house. He got off his car and knocked on the door of the second floor apartment.
Changmin was ready five minutes before the knock came to his door. Jaejoong had insisted in picking him up and treating him to dinner, but it didn’t really take much begging to convince him. The detective had been convinced from the moment the other man had mentioned it but the better side of his judgment kept getting in the way of his impulses.
“Hey!” Jaejoong exclaimed as soon as the door opened, revealing the handsome detective on the other side. “Ready? ‘Cause I’m really hungry.”
Changmin smiled and lifted his arm that had a jacket draped over it to show he was all set. “Let’s go then.”
Both men hopped in a gray, 2005, Daewoo Matiz. It’s the first car Jaejoong had bought on his own. He kept it in perfect conditions and squeaky clean both inside and outside. Changmin noticed how polished it looked and had to wonder if maybe his new friend was a clean freak. He had been to his house in several occasions after that first time and it was always neat no matter what. Not a thing out of place. “You just wait until Aeyoung is around. Won’t be so neat anymore.” Was what Jaejoong had to say in his defense.
They decided on a 24hours restaurant somewhere in between where both of them lived. It wasn’t very big, it was cozy and overall they knew the quality of the food was great. After settling down on the table it wasn’t hard for them to start an animated conversation with many smiles, much laughter and a hint of Soju.

A dark, tall figure moved across the recently rained on, perfectly green grass. In the dark everything was silent, everything was a shadow. The man walking across the beautifully groomed yard reached a moderately sized green house surrounded by all sorts of floral trees and bushes, making the place look like some sacred temple. Inside there were various artificial ponds in which swam the whitest, purest lotus flowers in full bloom. Lighting up the scenery were random paper lanterns, work of the dedicated men and women who took care of the expansive, western style manor grounds.
At the edge of one of the ponds the man kneeled, a knife in his hand. He scooped one of the white flowers off the water and cut its stem, taking it gently between his hands and placing it in a small plastic box to keep it fresh. It almost resembled a corsage.
Once back inside his expensive car he made himself comfy in his seat. “Ready to go?” He asked to the motionless doll of a woman sitting next to him in the passenger seat. Her head was slumped to the right, leaning against the car window. “This is for you. Do you like it? Isn’t it beautiful?” There was obviously no response from the other side. “I’ll take your silence as a yes.”
---------------------------------------
“Seriously Choikang? No way! For real?” Jaejoong was stunned by the new information. He would’ve never guessed such a thing about the detective. At the same time he was very glad that the other man would feel comfortable enough around him to share such intimate information with him.
“I’m being 100% serious Youngwoong. I am bisexual. I’m proud of it.” Changmin’s eyes shone with pride and amusement. He never knew how to tell Jaejoong that he was also attracted to men. Normally he wouldn’t care, everyone in his office and in his family knew about it. In Jaejoong’s case he was still having conflicts between his work ethics and his personal interests. To him it was like if he admitted to Jaejoong that he preferred men then there would be nothing stopping them from feeling attracted to each other.
Jaejoong couldn’t be more shocked. The last thing he imagined was that the detective would be anything other than completely straight. He was simply so handsome and exuded this aura about him that screamed of everything a regular macho should have by social standards. To Jaejoong’s eyes, he was perfect. A perfect gentleman, a perfect detective, a perfect Adonis, a perfect friend. To Jaejoong, Changmin seemed everything but attainable. That simple statement opened up expansive planes in the dancer’s mind. Areas of his psyche he didn’t exactly want to deal with until the nightmare of the murders was over. But alas, the ways of the mind and the ways of the heart are much too complicated for humans to fully understand or control.
Something changed at that moment. They both knew.
---------------------------------------
It was a very quiet area. People around that part of town were more domestic. There wasn’t a soul in the entire area after 9pm. Few cars were tracking around the neighborhood. One very expensive looking car drove through the nearly deserted streets into a picnic area, coming to a halt slowly. Leaving the car engine running, with the lights off, the tall man got off, gallantly walking around the car and pulling out the limp body of the ‘pure lady’.
With only mild difficulty the man managed to pull her out of the car and over his shoulder. It had been raining all weekend; the soil was soft and loose. This made the task of walking towards the trees harder for him. He was determined though.
“Beautiful and pure maidens should lay in the arms of mother nature.” Carrying her through the trees and bushes he walked for about ten minutes until he reached the edge of the greenery, right at a clearing where a small children’s recreational park was located.
The pale body of the woman was placed right at the foot of a thick, sturdy tree. Her back was leaned on to the aged plant; her hands were carefully and neatly folded over her lap. “Remember this?” The man asked while taking the small plastic box out of the inside of his jacket. “It’s just for you, in celebration of your newly acquired purity.” The luscious white lotus flower was delicately placed between her limp hands.
With a small brush the man combed the woman’s hair and finally he sprayed some perfume on her. Before standing up he placed a kiss on her forehead. “Be happy now, you’re free.”
Finally leaving the woman behind, the man headed back from where he came from. His car was still right where he had left it. There was still no soul in sight. It was still just as dark, just as silent, just as wet and slippery. Careful as not to slip in the saturated soil he jumped back in his car and drove away into the night.
---------------------------------------
It was around 11:30pm when Jaejoong and Changmin left the restaurant. They were still laughing and happily chatting like they hadn’t had the chance to since they met. It was about a month ever since that time when the now exotic dancer was waiting for him at his office at five in the morning.
“Why don’t we go hang out? Yeah! We should! Come on Choikang. We can go dance for a while or catch a midnight movie.” Jaejoong wasn’t willing to let go of the detective just yet.
“Youngwoong… I’d love to but it’s Sunday, I have work tomorrow.” He really wished he could’ve just accepted but life wasn’t all about your own pleasures and he really worked hard to not give in to his impulses.
“Aaw… right… I had forgotten everyone else outside the club has a day time job.” Jaejoong commented casually with an easy smile on his face.
Suddenly Changmin had the extreme urge to ask if the other had ever followed through with Park’s recommendation of him becoming a prostitute on the side. The detective stopped in his tracks and looked at the blue clad back that kept on walking ahead of him. When the other noticed that Changmin wasn’t walking with him anymore he turned around with a questioning look.
“What is it? You ok Min?” He knew the detective didn’t like that Jaejoong called him by that nickname while they were out in the open where anyone could see them together, but he was worried for the guy. His change in demeanor was so sudden. The other wasn’t even smiling anymore. On the contrary his brow was furrowed and his eyes got that look that he already recognized as the detective in deep thought. “Shim Changmiiiin~ Earth to Min~”
Said detective snapped his head up to meet Jaejoong’s eyes close up. They were so close he had to take a step back out of the impression. “Jesus!! Don’t scare me like that!”
“Hahaha. No need to be so jumpy handsome.” Jaejoong tried to hide his laughter but it was impossible. Changmin’s face had been priceless. “What were you thinking so hard about?”
Changmin looked up, smiled and shook his head. “It’s nothing really. Just thinking about the whole case. Need to warm up for tomorrow.” He assured the other with a smile then draped his arm over the broad shoulders of his companion. “How about we grab a movie and head to my apartment?”
“Ooooh, sounds good to me detective.” Both men smiled at each other. There was something between them that seemed to grow every day. They saw more of each other. Felt comfort in each other’s shoulders. But most of all their proximity just seemed natural to them.
---------------------------------------
The expensive car had left that lonely park behind twenty minutes before. It was now pulling into a parking space in front of a small apartment building in the heart of Seoul. The tall, handsome man that had been maneuvering the vehicle got off and walked up to the building. On the front door welcome mat he made sure to wipe his shoes dry before proceeding.
The security guard in the lobby was already familiar with him. He no longer asked questions or looked at him with awe. He was used to such an important person walking in through the lobby every other night. “Good afternoon.” The man greeted before hopping into the elevator.
Five floors up he got off, waving goodbye to Mrs. Bae who lived one floor further up. A charming smile was adorning his face as he finally reached his destination. He knocked on the door to apartment 507. The silver colored, metallic plaque on the wall next to it read ‘Kim Junsu’. A faint “Coming!” was heard from within and the man on the door began dusting his suit jacket and fixing his hair.
Another small commotion was heard from inside. A series of clicking and clinking sounds were heard as the man inside the apartment unlocked the door. Five seconds later a bright, smiling face appeared on the threshold. “Yunnie!!” An excited Junsu practically jumped on the tall figure, pulling him inside instantly. “Come on in babe. You know the drill.” Yes, in fact, he knew the drill. He already knew that apartment as if it were his own.
“Junsu-ah I’m hungry and my feet hurt…” He said with what he hoped was a cute pout. “Feed me and give me a massage love.”
Junsu rolled his eyes at the man. “You know where everything is Jung Yunho. If you want a servant then get a wife.” He said with a huff. “I was about to take a shower, why don’t you just forget about all that and join me?” Junsu approached Yunho and placed his hands around his firm waist, sporting a devilish smirk. “Those things can wait a little longer.”
“Ever heard of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?” Junsu just looked up at Yunho with the most lost of faces. “Never mind.”
Yunho smiled and laid a small kiss on the younger man’s lips. “Alright Su, I’ll neglect my basic needs and shower with you. But you know I’m hungry so I might just switch my dinner for your body.” He commented while biting down lightly on his neck.
Both men made their way into Junsu’s room where the promising shower was waiting for them.
