It had been weeks and weeks and weeks that Donghai had been asking to go to the beach. However Geng and Shiyuan had been very busy with planning the other children’s occupations, so they didn’t found time so they could all go together.

First of all, Mimi had started driving lessons (“My boy has turned 16, I feel SO old!” Geng had whined into his husband’s shoulder one night as they were cuddling in their bed.)

Second, Lixu had started piano with a personnal teacher. ( “Hopefully, he’ll be better than his parents” had laughed Uncle Youngwoon on the phone when Shiyuan had called him to pick up some news about the cousins in Korea… Geng, frustrated, had refused talking with Jungsu right after the fathers had finished with their talking)

Third, Kuixian was still at the hospital from his accident weeks ago, so Geng and Shiyuan were there with him at least three hour per day… Sometimes the brothers, or at least some of them, were coming, sometimes they had “better things to do”, which meant that they couldn’t stand seeing their brother in this state for a large amount of time. (“He’ll be alright… he HAS to be alright.” had become Shiyuan’s frequent sentence each time he entered the hospital.)

Finally, young Xianhua had started violin lessons with Auntie Liyin. (“I just hope he won’t start playing at four in the morning like SHE was doing” complained the Mama, while he was off buying the instrument for his five-year-old son)

So, poor Donghai… he was the only one with nothing to do. He had taken dance lessons at the beginning of the year, but his instructor fell sick so the lessons were cancelled for more or less than a year. Now, he was roaming in the house, bored. Often when he was there Mi would propose playing video games. Kuixian was usually Donghai’s favourite gaming partner, but since the fourth son was still recovering from that huge accident he had been implied into, Donghai would do with Mi.

But most of all… He REALLY wanted to go to the beach… run into the sand and throw himself in the huge waves of the sea. He wasn’t called Fishy for nothing! With that in mind he had been asking Geng and Shiyuan over and over and over again.

One night, Geng took place on the edge of Donghai’s bed and watched his boy sleep. He was feeling lonely, and his Mama could see it… Mother instinct? Probably. It wasn’t because he was a man that he was an improper mother figure! Brushing hair away from his son’s face, Geng kissed his forehead and went to his own bedroom where he found his husband waiting for him…. and reading his Bible. Geng rolled his eyes as he got a pyjama out of the drawer.

“You’ve read it thirty-two times ever since we’re married, Shi… aren’t you sick of it? You don’t even need to read it anymore…”

Shiyuan got his eyes off the holy book, eyebrows up in surprise, and looked at his wife who was crawling under the covers. Geng had tears in his eyes… okay, so that is why he was so cranky… he had stuff on his mind. So the eyebrows went down in order to frown.

“What’s going on? Oh Geng, don’t cry…”

The father of the family put down his Bible on the bedside table and went to rub soothing circles on the back of his darling. Geng was always crying for his children lately: Kuixian’s accident, Mi’s growing up faster than they saw it pass, Xianhua who was already getting out of the house without them being with him all the time. Now, Shiyuan wondered what was putting tears on the beautiful face that night. He too wanted to cry sometimes, but he was pulling the strong façade so his lover could lean on him. Geng was more sensible to that stuff… he was the mother, after all.

“It’s our little fish… he’s lonely and he has nothing to do… and he really wants to go to the beach… It’s been weeks, now!”

“Why don’t you go with him, then? No need to get all moved up for that, love… shush… calm down, now…”

“But Mi’s lessons and Lixu’s… and Kuixian….”

“I can go for the three of them and Liyin picks Xianhua up right before I have to leave for Mimi and Lixu’s own lessons… I can manage, alright? And while the other children are away, I’ll go check on our Miracle, alright? Stop stressing over so much, Geng… You’re driving yourself mad and I don’t really need to know that you count the number of times that I read the Holy Bible”

Geng smiled before pulling his husband for a kiss.

“Better get asleep, then… We both have huge day tomorrow… I love you… even if you keep on reading the same book over and over again... still don’t know what so special about it...”

The last part was mumbled, which made Shiyuan chuckle as he snuggled Geng close to him. He was used to that, and he loved his Chinese marvel just like he was... and "religious or not" was part of it.

When Donghai woke up in the morning, he heard a lot of noise. Wondering what the hell was going on, he rushed to feed his fish in its bowl before running downstairs. There, he found Mi trying to read a book… he was doing revision before his driving lesson… and Lixu was running after Xianhua because the little boy had taken the last apple while Lixu had claimed it at supper the previous evening. Shiyuan was helping Geng prepare the lunches, trying to calm down his sons, even if the mother was saying that it was okay for today to let them run around like that.

“Good morning, everyone…”

“Good morning my fish! Slept well?” answered Geng with a smile, voice louder than usual in order to cover the noise.

“Yes, thanks Mama… hum… why is there five lunches?”

Wasn’t there less, usually?

Geng smiled to his son before taking his hand and pulling him next to the lunchboxes. Donghai quickly undestood what it meant: long explanations.

“You see, this is Mi’s lunch box so he can eat in the bus while coming back, and this is Lixu’s…. Your auntie wanted some pies, so they are in this lunchbox, that way Xianhua can give them to her. This one is for your Papa, because Kuixian got some food craving and your father is going to see him.”

Donghai looked at his Mama and frowned… Papa only? But Mama never left Kuixian’s side!

“And this one… that’s ours”

“Ours?”

Shiyuan smiled at the two of them, closing the four first lunchboxes and going to stop Xianhua and Lixu from battling for an apple. Gen hugged his boy while he answered his question

“Didn’t you expressed the want to go to the beach?”

Donghai’s face instantly lit up. Then he checked in the lunchbox and saw the chocolate cookies, then let out a cry of joy… He wasn’t acting like a twelve-year old boy at all, sometimes.

“Oh, thank you, Mama! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

He was hugging Geng forcefully, making his mother laugh as he kissed the top of the boy’s head.

“You’re welcome, Donghai… so, up! Go get your beach bag ready! We’re leaving soon!”

“YAAAAAAAY!”

…..

Everyone had left the house at the same time and it took more or less than an hour for Geng and Donghai to reach the beach.

Donghai had rushed to the sea, not caring about anything else. Laughing, his Mama had placed everything on the sand… the towels, the umbrella… Lunchbox in shadows… Opening the lunchbox, Geng sighed loudly.

“Shiyuan…. You’re lucky I love you…”

There, in the lunchbox, instead of Geng’s book about Ancient China, was Shiyuan’s Bible with a post-it on it:

“my love... please try?”

Geng rolled his eyes and picked the book, trying to mind himself into reading it... it was only a book with huge sentences mae of nonsense!

“Mama?”

Geng, just like his husband did so often, rose his eyes from the book just enough to see his son over it.

“Yes Donghai? Already done with the waves? I’m surprised.”

“That’s not it, Mama… I just thought about it and I wondered…”

“Come… sit and talk to me about it…”

Geng patted the beach towel next to his: it was blue and decorated with tons of little fishes on it.

“Mama… why do all the people I know… they’re always busy?”

Geng smiled softly, put the Bible back in the lunchbox and smiled even more at his son’s questionning stare.

“If you don’t know yet, it’s okay… the longer it takes you to understand why, the longer Mama is relieved… now, go play in the water… we went just for that.”

And as Donghai was throwing himself in the waves again, Geng had to wipe out the tears threatening to fall down his cheeks...

His son was growing up… way faster that they were giving him credits for...
