“MAMAAAAAAA!”
“Geng, Mi is calling for you”
“He would be calling for you too if he knew how to say it the way you want him to.”
With a sigh, Geng got out of his bed, not without kicking his husband for being a lazy ass, and found his child perched on his own bed, shaking and looking at the floor with worried eyes. Frowning at the lack of smile from the usually always cheery child, the mother entered the small room next to the master bedroom, where his little boy should be sleeping by now.
“Mimi, sunshine, what is going on?”
The small whimper told him that his boy was more then worried over something: he was afraid. Of what? Geng had no idea, looking around there was nothing that could dictate a fear from the little boy.
“Ze grou-een shmelly mounster!”
“Mimi, speak properly, please, Mama can’t understand when you talk like that.”
“The g…gr…green..sme…smelly… mo..monster!”
“Green smelly monster?”
There. Child’s imagination. Mi was two and a half, and growing way too quickly for his emotional mother. He was now seeing fake stuff around the house. Geng who had always told his baby that nothing could happen to him while he had Geng or Shiyuan around… He felt as if he had lied… when in fact it was the boy’s imagination that turned the promise into a lie.
“I don’t smell anything, sunshine.”
“It’s because he doesn’t want to eat you!”
“Mi… come on. What could eat you? You’re too much of a tall boy to be eaten by a monster! Monsters don’t eat tall children! You take from your Pa, and he was never afraid of monsters because he’s very tall! Pa is tall, isn’t he?”
“Yes…”
“There, come here. Mama will protect you.”
“Can Pa chase the monster from under my bed? Since he’s tall…”
“Yes he can… but you have to ask him yourself.”
Picking his boy up in his arm, kissing his cheek in the process, Geng walked back to the master bedroom, where his partner was sleeping soundly. THAT, that is one hell of a family father!
“Choi Siwon, wake up or I swear you’ll be sorry to have ended up married with me!” growled Geng in Korean, making sure that the information would reach the other through sleep.
“What is going on, hyung? Why so violent this morning?”
“You son here has something to ask you”
Geng let Mi’s feet touch the mattress, seeing his son walk a few uncertain steps before falling on his knees to cuddle next to his father. Shiyuan opened a eye and shot a smile to his son who smiled back, holding the boy closer as he sat, trying to ignore his wife who clearly looked like he wanted to rip his head off. Oh well, Siwon was used to it, it’s not as if they were deeply in love, after all… They had been matched up together by the company…
“What is it, my boy?”
“Chase the big, green smelly monster!”
“Whaaat? There is a green smelly monster under your bed? Papa will have to do something about it! But you will have to help me!”
“Noooo! I don’t want to!”
Mi started shaking his head in all directions, mouth closed firmly and hand close to his body. Knowing that “cute” denial move quite well, Shiyuan laughed but held his boy’s hands in his big ones.
“Yes, you have to help me. You have to be a big boy and show to the monster that you aren’t afraid of it!”
“But I am!!!!”
The little boy scrawled his way up in such a way that he had his nose glued in the warmth of his father’s neck. Shiyuan cruckled and rubbed the little back. He could see the tears in Geng’s eyes. Sometimes he still had problems understanding the other man, but he knew those tears, knew what they were about: They had had so many problems in trying to create the little being in Shiyuan’s arms that Geng simply couldn’t believe that they had managed to do it. Every time he spotted moments like these, the man would get teary. Seeing his husband smile at him in understanding, the mother of the family wiped his tears away and mumbled that he needed to go the bathroom, leaving the two other boys together.
“Now, let’s go! Papa will protect you. The monster will be scared of Pa, so you don’t have to be afraid of the monster, okay?”
“Okay…”
Getting out of bed, carrying his boy with him back in the child’s bedroom, Shiyuan let Mi get on the floor while himself crouched to check under the bed.
“ouuuh he looks nasty! Tell him you aren’t afraid, Mi.”
“I…I…”
“Come on, he won’t believe you if you say it like that, he gets curious now.”
“I’M NOT SCARED OF YOU BIG MONSTER!”
“There, it worked!”
Shiyuan got out from under the bed with a huge smile. Geng was in the doorway, arms crossed but smiling.
“You did it, sunshine! Look, it got transformed into this!”
From under the bed, Shiyuan took out a green apple, rotten and covered with dust. The little boy, seeing such a disgusting thing, ran back in his parents’ bedroom with an outraged scream... Laughing, the father of the little family got out from on the floor, only to meet with his wife’s disapproving glare.
“I’m in trouble now, aren’t I?”
“I asked you to clean his bedroom while I was off to check on Donghai’s growth…”
“Sorry, I never thought about looking under the bed.”
“It’s okay. Now, let’s get back to bed. There aren’t monsters under beds anymore, but I think Mi will want to cuddle with us anyway…”
With a smile, Shiyuan took the offered hand of his wife and the both of them went to bed, their finally peaceful son already sleeping.
A few years later, another forgotten apple would most probably explain the second child’s addiction about aliens…
