~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Kris Allen simply couldn’t see the point of working a nine-thirty AM shift on the day after All Soul’s. He’d agreed to take the morning shift since Cale promised him a bonus, but the fact that they had been sitting around the coffee shop doing nothing for the past hour and a half was starting to get to him.
“I should’ve stayed home until lunch time”, Cale Mills muttered, finally breaking the silence. “Cassidy got a little miffed at me this morning since I couldn’t fuck him good morning.”
“…you fuck him good morning?” Tommy Joe Ratliff - the normally straight-laced fellow who ran the cash register - raised an eyebrow. “That’s something new from you.”
“Oh my gosh, lovemaking in the morning?” David Archuleta stammered, his face going three shades of crimson. “Doesn’t that like, exhaust you or something?”
“Don’t tell me Cook doesn’t stick his cock back into your ass as soon as he wakes up”, Cale was incredulous. “Cass and I can go at it all day.”
“Goodness, Cale!” Kris threw his hands up into the air. “Archie’s only seventeen and is very new to all of this, okay? And choose your words, please.”
“Krissifer Allen, coffee shop mommy”, Tommy said teasingly, a half-smile pulling at the corners of his mouth. “I can totally see it happening, just so you know.”
Kris tossed a wad of paper napkins at Tommy as a way of telling him to shut up. The last thing he wanted was for Archie to find out that Kris had slept with his father in a supposedly haunted house on Halloween night. Yesterday, Cassidy Haley had sent him a text saying that Adam didn’t tell Archie anything, which meant that Kris would have to be on his toes around the kid all the time. It was a difficult task because Archie was the sweetest thing on the planet since the invention of moist caramel chiffon cake, and it didn’t help that the boy really sought Kris out as his ‘mother’ figure. If Kris could have his way, he’d probably crawl under the table and cry.
That would give him an excuse to bawl about Adam Lambert, too.
When he had woken up the second time around that fateful day, Adam had wrapped himself around Kris like some sort of boa constrictor, giving him no room to escape. He had panicked, though, and managed to wriggle out of the embrace (read: full-body lock) get into his clothes and run back to his apartment, shakily trying to get ahold of Tommy - he was on speed dial number six right after his parents, Daniel and Cassidy - feeling like he might die if he couldn’t find anyone to talk to within the next ten seconds.
It had belatedly occurred to him that he didn’t even leave his number on the bedside table, and that had been the very reason why he had spent two days pining for Adam like a grieving widow.
“Stop it with the sighing, you idiot”, Tommy muttered affectionately, draping an arm around Kris’ shoulders. “I’m sure you’re in the mood to hear something positive, so heed my words: I think this Lambert dude seriously likes you. You’re both chummy with Haley, and it would have been easy enough Lambert to get your number from the guy if he wanted to talk to you. However, it’s obvious that he didn’t, and I think it’s because he wants to be able to reach you on his own terms.”
“…so I should wait?”
“Why not?” Tommy half-smiled. “Three years ago, you told me that you were willing to wait for as long as it takes for the right person to come along. I don’t know if this guy is your Mister Right, but if you like him enough to sleep with him and pine for him when you’ve only been apart for two days, then he’s probably a special guy.”
“I just realized that’s the most words you’ve ever spoken outside a Twitter conversation”, Kris chuckled. “But seriously, thanks, Tommy; I would never know what to do without you.”
“Well, I’m the rock to your cotton”, Tommy shrugged. “Or something along the lines of that since rocks and cotton don’t really go well together.”
“And I thought you were a poet”, Kris admonished him. “That analogy was just horrible.”
“Okay, okay”, Tommy poked his forehead. “Hey, do you want to skedaddle? If no customers trickle in by ten o’clock, let’s go out for some brunch and a movie.”
“Sounds good”, Kris agreed. “As long as it’s anywhere Katy O’Connell isn’t - she’s scary, man.”
“Like an oversized Polly Pocket out to get her grubby hands on you”, Cale chimed in. “You were lucky I was with you during Halloween because she probably put that go-go dancer getup on you for raping purposes.”
“Please don’t talk about rape so early in the morning”, Archie squeaked, flailing. “And uhm, that sure sounds toppy of this Katy girl.”
“Trust me on this, Archuleta”, Tommy said dryly. “The word ‘toppy’ is an understatement for her.”
Just as Archie was about to ask another question, the door flew open, and a harassed-looking Adam Lambert practically fell into the shop. His hair stuck out wildly in a million directions, his eyeliner hastily drawn on, and his scarf was nearly falling off his shoulders. The dark-haired man scanned the area quickly, his eyes resting momentarily on Cale, Tommy, Archie, and finally - Kris.
“You.”
Kris stood rooted to his spot, head whipping around nervously in search of a good place to hide. The look in Adam’s eyes was inscrutable, but Kris was sure that the guy probably wanted to mangle him.
“…fuck, I was looking all over for you!” Adam managed to choke out.
Kris let out a little squeak of fear as Adam purposefully strode towards him, the rubber soles of his combat boots making imposing sounds against the wooden floor. He closed his eyes, praying for the blow to come quickly and painlessly.
It never did, though - because Adam has grabbed his shoulders and pressed his lips to Kris’, making the Starbucks barista’s eyes fly open in shock.
“…wha?” he mumbled dazedly when Adam released him.
“Jesus Christ, you have no idea how hard you are to find!” Adam exclaimed, his hands flying up in what Kris supposed was frustration. “I spent the whole morning scouring all the Starbucks branches!”
“Dude, why didn’t you just call Cassidy?” Cale leaned back in his seat, biting back a chuckle.
“…that didn’t even occur to me”, Adam blinked. “All I knew was that Kris was gone when I woke up, and all I knew about him was that he worked in a Starbucks.”
“…oh my gosh, you slept with Kris?” Archie gasped.
“Danny didn’t tell you?” Adam frowned.
“How come I’m always the last to know?” Archie pouted, looking hurt. “I’m seventeen, not five!”
“Earth to Kris Allen”, Tommy waved his hand up and down in front of Kris’ face. “Helloooo.”
Kris collapsed onto the nearest stool, still reeling in shock from the sudden kiss. Sure, they’d kissed when they had sex, but being kissed by a man who was still practically a stranger to him was totally bizarre, especially when he was expecting to be murdered.
“Anyway, I’m here to start on the right footing”, Adam said nervously, picking at the polish on his thumbnail. “We obviously did things backwards, and I just wanted to stop by to ask you out for lunch today so we could uh, get to know each other better.”
Kris remained silent.
“Only if you’re interested, I mean!” Adam babbled away. “If you’re not, I won’t force you. I mean, it’s going to suck on my part since I think I really could like you, but if you don’t - ”
“…okay”, Kris interrupted him shakily.
“Is that an ‘okay-I’ll-go-out-with-you’?” Adam asked hopefully.
“Yeah”, Kris managed a wobbly smile. “If Cale allows me, that is.”
“Go on, shorty”, Cale grinned. “You’ve been mooning over Lambert for days, so I’d be one hell of a bastard if I detained you any further.”
“Days, eh?” the look on Adam’s face changed from nervous to absolutely delighted.
“I hate you, Cale”, Kris shot his manager a dirty look as he switched his apron for his jacket. “You’ve just made it clear that embarrassing me is your life’s mission.”
“Hey, I do it, too”, Tommy interjected. “Only more with more subtlety - speaking of which, you’d better tweet me updates, Allen. I need more good material to blackmail you with.”
“Gosh, I hate you all!” Kris wailed. “Except you, Archie honey; no one could ever hate you.”
“Be a good boy, baby”, Adam patted the top of Archie’s head. “Papa’s going to have some fun with your very sexy co-worker.”
“Daddy!” Archie flailed. “You’d better explain things to me when you get home!”
“Stop scaring your son, Adam”, Kris rolled his eyes, dragging Adam out the door. “We’d better get out of here before you end up scaring everyone else - I’m your only victim, remember?”
“That you are, sweetheart”, Adam laughed gaily, looping his arm around Kris. “That you are.”
