Note: My first foray into the H50 fandom.
Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett stares down at the screaming body in his arms and feels his heart drop into his stomach. His many years of training utterly fail him in this moment and he experiences a sudden, foreign sense of panicpanicpanic explode in his chest and crawl down his spine. He feels his mouth drop open unconsciously, gaping, dry and unable to form words. All he can do is stare; all he can hear is the cry, high-pitched and unending.
He doesn’t know what to do and he is right on the edge of totally losing it when a hand drops atop his left shoulder. He nearly jumps out of his skin.
“Jesus, Steve. It’s a baby not a bomb. Wait, what am I saying? If it were a bomb, you’d be having a field day.”
It’s amazing, the flush of relief that courses through Steve at the sound of Danny’s mockery. He tears his still-wide eyes away from the tiny, angry face peaking out from the makeshift swaddling to look at his partner.
But Danny isn’t looking at him. He’s looking at the little baby boy in Steve’s arms with an expression of fondness. His eyes are soft and his mouth sports an easy curve.
“So now, will you quit with these public throwdowns? I swear to God, it feels like we get into a street fight at least once a week.”
Danny doesn’t look away from the baby while he talks. His right hand is still on Steve’s shoulder and his other hand comes up from his side and extends forward.
“No one was hurt this time, thank God, but you managed to scare a woman into labor, Steven. Only you could turn a Tuesday afternoon into such a clusterfuck.”
Steve watches in awe and fascination as Danny reaches towards the baby and begins to pet the back of the little boy’s hand with his index finger. He’s so focused on the movement of Danny’s hand, it takes him a moment to realize something has changed.
The baby has stopped crying.
“How did you…” is all he is able to get out before his entire world falls out from beneath him.
All he can focus on is the tiny, pink hand turning over and grabbing Danny’s finger.
Danny lights up like the Fourth of July, eyebrows jumping up his forehead while his smile splits his face. Steve feels his heart, the same heart that had started this whole mess tight and panicked, swell in his chest, and when Danny looks up at him, so honest and open and happy, the damn things almost sings.
When he looks back at the wrinkled little face, the fear is gone, replaced by the joy Danny is radiating. It’s seeping into Steve’s skin and he feels himself finally smile as he brings the bundle closer to his chest, grinning just a little wider when Danny shuffles closer, finger still trapped in the baby’s grip.
“Aloha, little man,” Steve whispers. “Welcome to Hawaii.”
