Alien ear kissing from Zhaan! I LOVE her. She was the first character not John or Aeryn that I just really instantly fell in love with. That scene, or snippet, is so funny. Its like, DUDE that doesn't happen in Kansas!
Like you I didn't know much about the show, other than John & Aeryn were the main romantic couple, which I think EVERYONE knows, had a kid and one other thing. But really nothing else. Which is a good way to be for this show, but then I also didn't expect it to be SOOOOOO SCI-FI! Cause man are there some weird, annoying, and ugly aliens. But that's beside the point.
I did enjoy the snark between John and Aeryn - and his ability to so easily care for her (and D'Argo) so soon after being thrown into unfamiliar surrounding (understatement!ahoy) was lovely - as well as the setup for what I assume is Aeryn's journey away from being a cog in a machine of the Peacekeepers.
John & Aeryn snark & banter very well. They kinda do everything well really! I do luff them! But John Crichton is a good guy, first and foremost, who never bargined for ending up where he did. BB is so wonderful as him. I would say more, but I don't want to spoil you. I'll do so as you get further in, probably end of S1ish.
Aeryn as you said is a cog in the PK machine. And while she knows that, its as she says while he's trying to get her to leave with him & D'Argo, its her duty, her breeding, its all she's ever known.
Their journeys, together & individually, really all the characters, are remarkable, its a hallmark of the show. I've never watched a show that has as much character development as this one. The continuity fairy also loves this show hard.
I have to admit each time someone I know starts the show I envy them a little. Its a remarkable journey the first time through, but then it also seems to never get old. When you get ready I'd be happy to rec you some of my favorite fics I've found, though I'm still in the discovery phase myself. There are some amazingly talented writers to be found. Its a really wonderful fandom, amazingly civil and very welcoming of newcomers, something I've been pleased and surprised by. Some of it might be the having to band together after the show was canceled, but Scapers are very nice people.
