... The Best Birthday Present ...

BirthdayBlog: Last night, Peter told me about this article in WoW Insider (A World of Warcraft online magazine/blog type of thing). Basically, a Blizzard employee has decided to try to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by offering 1 year subscriptions to the game for 3 people, and if she reaches her goal, she will draw another name fo the "Lifetime Subscription" prize - never pay for WoW again. All a person has to do is to donate $25, and leave a comment as outlined on the donation page. Her goal was to raise $5000 - as I write this, the donations stand at $13,575!!!! Amazing.

So, why is this labelled "birthday"? My birthday is this Friday, Jan 2nd. As you all may or may not know, my dearest friend, AnaFe (or just "Fe") passed away a few years ago because she had Hodgkin Lymphoma. She was going through treatments, and all of that - it destroyed her immune system, so she couldn't fight off the simplest thing. From what I understand, she got some kind of infection that went straight to her brain and killed her, before they could even determine what it was. When she was first diagnosed, it seemed to go into remission, but on a check sometime later, they discovered the cancer somewhere else. She had to undergo more severe treatment - she was scared - I remember her writing to me about it, how she was in her twenties, and she'd never be able to have children because the treatments would cause her to go through early menopause or something. Basically, it would make her infertile. This was her fear. Not that someone across the room could cough or sneeze, and she'd get infected and die because the treatments made it impossible for her to fight it off. But my heart still aches for her unborn children. My heart still aches for the life that was taken away by a terrible disease and the treatments.

My birthday wish, the best present someone could ever give me, would be to donate money to the cause, so that research can continue and a cure can be found, and other friends and families won't have to watch as the life is sucked from their loved ones, that they can hope and fight and beat it. Even if you don't play WoW, please help Katherine Allen make this the most amazing effort ever and show people that there is still hope and love and goodness in the world - and that the internet is a great tool to bring it all together.
