Beware of Mord-Sith

"How can I help you today?" The merchant crowded in on them as soon as they walked near his booth. Cara moved to shove him back in his place, but Richard held out an arm to stop her, smiling at the man.

"We're just passing through," he said.

The merchant wasn't to be dissuaded, though. He gestured to the row of blades on display. "I have the finest forged steel in this part of the Midlands. You travelers look like you see a good deal of action. It'd be a shame for you to miss this opportunity."

Cara glared, but Zedd seemed to feel sorry for the man and drifted over to look. The others followed his example, and Cara grudgingly went along so she wasn't standing alone in the street. The merchant had his wares arranged neatly, with tiny lettering along the bottom of each weapon. Cara leaned in to read, her brows rising.

"What's this?" she snapped.

He shrank back at her tone. "I've found it wise to include a warning to my potential buyers. There have been...complications in the past."

Richard and Kahlan shared a look, covering smiles behind their hands. Cara's brows drew together as she read aloud, "Do not attempt to stop the blade with your hand. Doing so will result in serious injury."

Zedd filled his mouth with the remnants of his apple to disguise his laugh. The merchant turned a bright shade of red. Cara wasn't sure what he was thinking, but he grabbed one of the daggers and pointed it at Kahlan. "These are the sharpest weapons in the Midlands!"

Cara reacted faster than he could blink. One hand dropped to her Agiel and the other gripped his wrist. She pressed the Agiel to his arm and the dagger clattered back to the counter. Before Richard could move to rescue the poor merchant, she released the man, giving him the chance to cradle his injured arm. She smiled sweetly. "I wouldn't try that again if I were you."

Richard took one of her arms while Kahlan took the other as they led her away from the booth. "I'm sorry," Richard said over his shoulder. "Perhaps we should consider a warning label for Mord-Sith in the future."

Kahlan snorted. Cara rolled her eyes. "Why do you think we wear red leather?"
