In Dreams
She ran, arms outstretched, pure joy shining in her eyes and in her carefree grin as her hair flew out behind her. Kahlan dropped to one knee and spread her arms in time to catch the child as she practically leapt onto her. The little girl giggled as Kahlan’s hair swept forward into her face.
“It tickles, Mommy.”
Kahlan smiled, lifting her child as she stood. She brushed back the girl’s tangled locks of dark hair and planted a gentle kiss on her nose. “We’d better hurry. Your father is waiting.”
The child’s excitement was infectious. “Daddy’s back?”
Kahlan nodded. “Daddy’s back.”

Richard smiled down at Kahlan, reaching to tuck back a loose strand of her long hair. Whatever she was dreaming, she looked perfectly happy and at peace, a small smile lifting the corner of her lips.
She stirred at his touch, opening her eyes to gaze up at him. He smiled, smoothing his fingers over her forehead. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you. You looked like you were having a good dream.”
She smiled back at him. “I was.”
He leaned close, kissing her forehead. “Go back to sleep.
She caught him as he pulled away, her fingers tangling in his hair. “Sleep can wait.”
