Chapter 7
---
“You didn’t call me after that.” He said, it was not a complaint, men never complained Kangin told himself, the next morning before calling.
“Sorry, Kangin-ah. I was too tired after that, I forgot.” He said into the phone that was pressed to his ear in between his shoulder. He was unlocking the door of the coffeehouse; the familiar ding of the bell indicated the beginning of a new day.
“Hmm, so how did you sleep last night?” Eeteuk asked, changing the topic, Kangin bought it and replied, a usual conversation followed on.
“What did you do last night anyways?” Kangin questioned suddenly out of nowhere.
“Oh, Hyukjae is back.” He smiled while he answered and Kangin heard the smile in his tone. He grunted a bit.
“Who?”
“Lee Hyukjae, the dance studio owner.”
“Oh, that monkey.” Kangin’s voice denoted that he was upset.
“Youngwoon-ah, what’s wrong?” Eeteuk said, didn’t notice what upset the man on the other line of course, he was oblivious that way.
“Nothing, I got to go now, I need to get ready for work.” He pretended to rush his sentence.
“Okay, be safe.”
“I will.” Then he hung up.
“…”
Less than a minute later, Eeteuk called again.
“You’re not jealous are you?” His voice asked gently.
“Of what?” He retorted.
“Who…” the older one corrected, “Hyukjae?”
“We’re going to eat dinner together tomorrow, get that little waiter of yours to work overtime.” Kangin said, as if Eeteuk wasn’t calling to ask if he was jealous of Lee Hyukjae. He thought that monkey boy was history since he left for another country to dance.
“Ha?” Eeteuk wasn’t quite sure what he heard.
“Dinner tomorrow. Get the prince waiter of yours to take your place at the coffeehouse.” He said again.
“Oh, okay.”
“Bye then.”
“By-” all Eeteuk heard was the phone line dead. He sighed but butterflies formed in his stomach because he was going to have dinner with Kangin, it made the man smile like 'an idiot' as how Kangin loved to put it.
---
From afar, he saw two people walking towards him, one familiar face nodded at Eeteuk, there wasn’t any smile on the cool milky skinned man while on the other hand, and the younger boy he brought was all smiles.
“Omo. Heechul-ah, a new friend?” Eeteuk asked, he had never seen any of Heechul’s friends besides those he stayed with, a tall Chinese man, another one with puffy cheeks, one with tired eyes all the time and another Chinese who always looked endearingly at Heechul, who he called Hannie. Heechul never allowed the one with puffy cheeks to take any caffeine though and Eeteuk remembered how red his cheeks were when Heechul had said no.
“No caffeine for him, Teukie, tea.”
“Gege!” the boy pouted and looked at the tallest one who just shrugged and pointed at Heechul. He then turned to ‘Hannie’ and repeated the same foreign words (to Eeteuk). Hannie’s respond was a pitiful look and then a mirrored action of the taller male, a finger pointed at Heechul.
The one beside him now was a friendly face, innocent even.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Lee Donghae.” He bowed at Eeteuk figuring that his resident was close to the man with dimpled smile because of the way he spoke to Heechul. And being the filial son of his father, he respected anyone that was older than him.
“Donghae-ssi, nice to meet you,” more dimpled smile and Donghae liked it.
“My intern, come on Teukie, coffee.” Heechul huffed, impatient as he sat himself near the counter, no where better than the counter. He needed to be all pumped up for the whole day, celebrating a birthday party wouldn’t end until at least midnight.
---
It was Heechul and Donghae’s day off. A rare occasion for interns and turned out it was on the same day as Heechul’s day off. The older one decided to bring Donghae over to his apartment after having coffee at Eeteuk’s place that morning. Heechul had some books he wanted to show Donghae, if he found it useful, Heechul would lend it to him or let him know where he had bought it.
When the two was in Heechul’s room, fumbling through the shelves of books, Hangeng returned, he wanted to take a shower before heading back to work, he happened to pass by the apartment. He was working overnight at the station with the team, Ryeowook decrypted more files for them. Heechul paid no heed to Hangeng and continued pointing out things in a book to Donghae and the boy listened to every single word, he looked like a puppy to Hangeng, which was rather cute.
He found it interesting that Heechul would bring another person back to their apartment, no one else but the other two that lived downstairs had entered the apartment and Heechul never mingled with other people. Heechul was the ice princess that isolated himself from everyone, even Hangeng sometimes but of course Hangeng didn’t know that.
The Chinese man locked his gun in the safe beside their bed and headed to the bathroom, a change of fresh clothes in his arm. “I’ll head back to the station after this, I’ll be back early tonight though.” He said and Heechul looked at him and nodded before continuing with the book.
When he was done showering, he went back to the safe to retrieve his gun. Heechul stepped onto the bed and crawled to reach Hangeng sitting by the bedside. He brushed his lips on the hollow of the Chinese man’s neck. Hangeng was blushing when he remembered the presence of an audience.
Donghae pretended not to notice the obvious but his ears were read and Heechul saw, “Your ears are all red, like Nemo’s fin, Donghae-ah.” He laughed and Hangeng tapped Heechul’s arm, as in to tell him to stop teasing the younger one, “Stop teasing the kid.”
“Aish, Hannie. Heebum-ah, Hannie is mean.” Suddenly the cat purred and stretched lazily before falling asleep again on the two’s bed.
“Even your precious Heebum is ignoring you.” Hangeng laughed.
“Aish, you go back to your station. Say ‘hi’ to Seasonings and Wookie, tell them to come home earlier tonight, we should go out for dinner tonight, and Donghae, you’re joining us since you have no plans tonight.”
“Why the sudden thought?”
“It’s our little Henli’s birthday, idiot. Donghae’s birthday is soon too, might as well celebrate it together.” Heechul smile showed a bliss feeling, a smile Donghae never seen.
Hangeng nodded and left after bidding goodbyes to Donghae and Heechul. Then, the man continued telling Donghae about his experiences in the EU, gunshot wounds, burns, trauma and a bit of everything.
---
“Kyuhyunnie-ah, are you free tonight?”
“Today is the…” he asked as he flipped to his classes’ page.
“October the 11th.”
“Yea, I have no class tonight, why?”
“Can you help watch the place for two hours? I have this…d-dinner with a friend.” The older man stuttered and his feelings were written all over his face, literally.
“Yeah, no problem, to replace that day when I came late.”
“It was raining cats and dogs, there’s no need to stress on that.”
“Oh, okay, then I will take on an extra shift on another day for it then.”
“Okay, never mind, tonight, two hours, your extra shift especially to fill in the time you came late.” Eeteuk honestly had no idea how to handle the wit of the kid; he would give himself a headache in the end; why bother really?
Kyuhyun gave his boss a smug smile and then texted Sungmin to come over to accompany him.
---
“Hello?” the lanky man asked and waved at Ryeowook when he entered the room, the one waved at simply nodded, his eyes glued to the computer screen. Another team member smiled back at Zhoumi and continued with his things; loads of reports it seemed.
“Hey, Seasonings! We’re going out together tonight to celebrate Henli’s birthday.”
“Oh, that’s great, where will we meet?”
“At the Chinese restaurant near the outskirts maybe? Henli loves the seafood they serve there right?”
“Especially after Geng ge ge thought him how to peel the shells off the crabs.” Zhoumi laughed and it caught Ryeowook’s attention. He knew the Chinese man was talking about Henry and the one on the other line was Heechul. He quickly saved whatever he was doing and closed the other files before leaping over to press his face close to Zhoumi’s trying to hear the conversation.
“Li Xu! Your hair is tickling my face.”
“Oh, sorry hyung.”
“Wookie-ah, I put you in charge of presents, you choose the best.” Heechul said, imagining how his dongsaengs would roll their eyes at the compliment, Ryeowook maybe a few victory shrieks and even a dance. Heechul continued to speak, if he took back the compliment, it would make it look more like a compliment and Heechul never gave anyone any sincere, or not, compliments.
“I’ll go pick Henli up at the Academy, you guys head to the restaurant after your shifts end. Hannie told me at 7, right?”
Zhoumi nodded and Ryeowook answered ‘yes’ for him, he was clearly preoccupied by the presents giving part of that day. The younger one turned and told him, “Don’t worry hyung, I already bought Henli’s presents for you all and he gets a special one from me!”
“Okay, bye guys, see you later. Oh, I took Hannie’s car.” Click, he was off the line.
“What do you mean special?”
“Nothing!” Ryeowook said and bounced back to his place, his fingers typed away while his face carried a smile, that Zhoumi was sure would not go anytime soon until his jaw ached.
---
“Hey Kyu!” the voice overlapped with the dings of the small bell.
“Hey hyung.” The younger’s voice did not match the enthusiasm of the other’s.
The male was dressed in a pink top beneath a really light pink shaded hodded jacket, his jeans was faded and the sneakers white. Kyuhyun never really understood how his friend dressed even though it had already been so many years.
“Hit me with your best!” he challenged the boy.
“Don’t come to my room and complain you can’t sleep later tonight.” Kyuhyun smirked and started preparing the beverage.
“Oh, your mom is throwing a dinner party tomorrow, it’s her b-”
“-birthday, I know.”
“So, are you go-”
“No, here are some sweet cakes,” he said, wanting his hyung to change to topic. It was not as if he didn’t want to know what was going on back at home but every time when his family was mentioned, he would feel a stab in the heart, guilt and betrayal all jumbled together. He left home and none of his family members called to ask where he was staying at, no one contacted his friends to ask if he was sleeping over at their place.
"Don't you dare step one foot in this house if you insist on taking medicine!"
The memory made him wince.
Sungmin knew how Kyuhyun would react to the news he delivered all the time, but he also knew how Kyuhyun wanted to know despite the pain of the memories. Usually Sungmin would tell him about things like those before they sleep because the worst Kyuhyun could do was stay up and bash the game console cursing at Starcraft visuals then he would forget about it after he reached a new level.
“Kyu…”
“Hyung, I’m an insolent child aren’t I?” Kyuhyun asked.
---
Henry was staying late at the Academy for another practice, the performance was in another month’s time. Sungmin went back an hour ago, like always but Henry and the other orchestra members from the strings’ section stayed a little longer to work a little more on their parts because most of them had to attend a course in the weekends.
The boy was talking to his Professor that Henry started to like besides the Professor who was the maestro; Maestro Park. The professor he was talking to was really talented in string instruments and Henry never said no to a string instrument lover. Plus, the professor spoke English!
The professor was waiting with Henry until Zhoumi arrived seeming that Henry was the last one left at the Academy.
“Prof, you should get back, I’ll do alright waiting alone. My brother is reaching soon anyways.”
“It’s okay, I have time to spare. So-”
“Oh, that’s my phone. Sorry…”
It was Zhoumi. He called to tell him he was on his way.
Henry wasn’t suspecting anything of course but it did make him wonder why did his brother even bother to call him to tell him that, Xi Che ge nor Hangeng ge would never forget to remind Zhoumi to pick up the magnae.
He was tired and it was cold, all the wanted to do was to go home and snuggle with Ryeowook and fall asleep like that.
“So, like I was saying, the performance is coming soon, how are you feeling?” the professor’s question was like the reporters Henry had encountered, so he knew how to answer that, “A little overwhelmed but-”
Out of nowhere, there were siren sounds coming from far away and it seemed to Henry and the vehicles were heading to their direction. Henry just watched, it looked like an action movie where the cops were chasing the bad guys and everything.
Right on cue, when the cars the cops were chasing neared the school, two men climbed out the window and started shooting the cops. Suddenly, two was shot relatively near to where Henry and the professor were. A normal person’s instinct was to move away and Henry did, he inched even further in. The tires screeched and there were ringing in Henry’s ears from the shots but when another shot went off, the ringing slowly faded and the sirens faded altogether.
Everything the boy saw was in slow motion, a muted slow motion movie. The cops just swooped by him, leaving him dazed, he wanted to move to the professor, to get him to run inside, shelter or something.
Pain tingled up his arm and chest and the he blinked out the tears in his eyes that he didn’t know even existed. He wanted to know what the heck was causing the pain of his arm so he turned and saw…
Blood…
Suddenly he realized the pained gasped of his breath, he was hearing things again, the ringing gone but the pain was just starting.
“Henli!” that was the last thing his knees failed on him.
