So Wong, the editor of Cracked.com, got bored the other day, as we all do. He decided the best cure for his boredom was to give away thousands of dollars to charity.
We talked him out of it.
Instead, we've raised and loaned out about $4,000 to small business owners in third world countries, through Kiva.org, a micro-lending group. For those unfamiliar with micro-loans, these are very small loans (usually in the range of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars) made to people in very poor areas. It's enough for them to start up a small, home based business, like buying a cow and selling the extra milk. The community gets extra food, the borrower builds wealth. They repay the money and you loan it out again, repeating the process. The dudes that invented it won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Anyways, here's Cracked's lender page, so you can see what we've loaned money to. Some of them were awarded purely because of the awesome pants they wore in their pictures.
