So for Earth Day on Sunday, Jimmy and I took the plunge and bought compact flourescent bulbs for the living room. This is the room we spend the most time and we tend to have the track lights on frequently, due to the lack of direct sunlight this room. We figured this would be the best room to start with.
When we bought the bulbs on Sunday, most of the incandescent bulbs in the track lights had burned out. The room was pretty dark, even with the lights on. Jimmy wanted to wait until they all burned out before replacing any. My husband's sort of a dick sometimes.
Anyways, we buy six new, energy efficient bulbs and replace the regular ones. They don't power on immediately. There's a delay of a few seconds, just like with regular flourescent lights, as the gas inside the tubes fires up. The room is now flooded with light. Tons of light. More light than you can shake a stick at. It turns out that not only do compact flourescents use a quarter of the energy of incandescents, they also give off about three times the light.
So last night, we took out two of the six bulbs in the track lights and the room is much more tolerable now. We put one of the extras in the guest bedroom, since we'll have someone using it soon. We put the last one away in the pantry for later. We don't want to put it in our bedroom, because there is no overhead in there and its far too bright for bedside reading. When the master bathroom lights burn out, I think we'll use it then.
