We're studying diaries and letters in sixth grade. The students have been assigned to read "Zlata's Diary" on their own. I'm reading "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl" to them. We've only read the first twenty pages of both so far.
Today's discussion was "Who would you rather be friends with? Anne or Zlata?" Most of the kids agree that Zlata seems much nicer. Anne spent two pages listing out everyone in her class at school and what she thought was wrong with them.
One of my girls, who is moving out of the district soon, thank god, said she prefered Zlata "Because she doesn't have any Nazi's". What? "Yeah, she's got the Nazi's with her all the time. I hate those guys."
It didn't occur to her that ANNE FRANK HATES NAZIS TOO. I mean, Jesus.
