Project Runway this week

Dec 13, 2014 19:11

Okay, so last week, the designers went to London and met FERGIE, BABY!!! And had to design coats inspired by Paddington Bear or Paddington Station or something because of course they’re product placing that god-awful movie with the terrible CGI.

Anyway, they loved Fabio’s:

And his won. And they hated Benjamin’s:

Which Isaac M called “offensive” - I just think Benjamin got booted for those jacked-up pockets. Cuz, yeah, I want everyone to know that I’m carrying a condom on my way down the street.

ANYWAY. So! That was last week and as it’s the end of the semester I was a total whore and missed posting. So this week! They are taking a fashion gamble. They have to throw big-ass dice across the runway with one die fabric and the other event.

Fabio: Denim/Masquerade ball
Sonjia: Brocade/Bachelorette party
Sam: Brocade/award ceremony
Michelle: Lace/gallery opening
Justin: Silk/gallery opening
Helen: Brocade/Award ceremony
Gunnar: Brocade/award ceremony
Jay: Denim/Sunday brunch
Dmitry: Velvet/Gallery opening

First, I really want them to challenge the designers to make Alyssa a dress to wear at the next runway while still preggers. Although the reward this week is Alyssa wearing THIS outfit in Marie Claire post-baby.

Guest judge: Ooooh, a real designer! CFDA winner Michael Bastian!

Here are the results.

Sonjia: Brocade/Bachelorette party

I really like this. I could never WEAR it oh wait, on reconsideration, I could totally have worn this during my slut phase when I was 21. Okay, all of my 20s. The fabric could be cheap on another design, but I think the cut makes this seem both casual and sophisticated. Sonjia was thrilled to be given this assignment since she’s getting married, so she designed something she wanted to wear. She should keep using herself as her muse.

Justin: Silk/gallery opening

Meh, not thrilled with Justin’s look this week. It’s boring. It’s not bad, but yeah. Boring.

Gunnar: Brocade/award ceremony

Hm… It’s interesting but I don’t know if I like it. He wanted to have some sort of cocoon/feather/high waisted… too much going on or something. Here’s the feathering on the bodice, which he cut out of the fabric himself:

Maybe if the waistline had been handled differently. What masquerade ball did he imagine this is for? I know Gunnar hated the idea of a ball, since he said the judges didn’t want to see a costume, but I think costume-inspired might have helped the imagination. (But hold on, Fabio’s actually has more problems on this line)

Helen: Brocade/Award ceremony

Boring. And will Alyssa want to wear a stomach-baring piece after she has a baby (or will this be motivating)? The color’s good but this is a dress with little risk.

Dmitry: Velvet/Gallery opening

I really like this. One of the other designers points out “it looks like liquid” and with that 70s Halston vibe, it’s really cool.

Jay: Denim/Sunday brunch

Well, it’s not something I’d wear to Sunday brunch, but I can see it. Jay’s pissed at Helen who told him the model looks like she's headed to the club, but she kind of does. I like the cut in general and the top looks much better at a distance, see:

Samantha: Brocade/awards ceremony

Ugh, I hate it. Yeah, the working is fine but this would be on all kinds of badly dressed lists. Will someone please ban peplums? And why would you cover up the plunging neckline with that god-awful necklace? The neckline is the only cool thing going on here.

Fabio: Denim/Masquerade ball

Well, I have no pink denim in my closet. This seems like kind of a cheat to me. The dress is fine, but it’s even more boring than Helen’s.

Michelle:

OMG this should just not work on pretty much every level but I really like it. I think my friends would lock me up if I showed up anywhere in this, but still. Here's a close-up that shows how interesting her choices were:

Jay, Dmitry, Sam, safe. Really, Dmitry and Sam? My high and low picks.

Judging:

Helen: Georgina is concerned about a slit/midrift/deep plunge. Isaac wants luxe. He thinks it’s “Comfy English sofa.” Michael likes the back (I think, he’s vague).

Sonjia: Michael says it’s very Vegas; Alyssa thinks she IS the bachelorette party; Isaac thinks it looks rich.

Justin: Isaac likes the neckline but thinks the proportion is missing, “matronly.” Georgina thinks it’s heavy - needs to “lose a sleeve.” Michael says, that’s it? In so many words.

Gunnar: Alyssa likes the dress, Isaac thinks it’s a miss, the fringe is “weirdly unresolved” and looks inexpensive. Georgina thinks it’s unflattering, and Michael thinks the cut seems “random.”

Michelle: Michael thinks the color is difficult and the construction is beautiful; Isaac thinks the bra is “a dirty little wink.” Padded hips are tough. Georgina thinks the chartreuse and gold together are “brilliant.”

Fabio: Georgina says “the dress is fine,” but he totally screwed the challenge pooch. Michael thinks he found the “least denim-y denim, if that really is denim” Alyssa: Pink taffeta. Isaac: “I think that Georgina is being nice when she says that dress is okay, I don’t think it’s okay…” Oooh. The styling sucks, it not the “real dress.”

So I will sum this up quickly by relating what I was thinking on a first watch Thursday night: There is NO WAY they are going to eliminate Fabio and Justin’s critique wasn’t that awful (tho I thought he should be out for being boring). But I couldn’t believe they’d eliminate Gunnar for that dress, because it was so much more creative and interesting than Fabio’s.

But of course they did.

So Gunnar Detheridge!! (He really needs to change that name, he just is NOT a ridge of death) is out. Boo! It should have been Fabio, based on that dress and the comments. Just when I was starting to really like Gunnar.

And the winner is: Sonjia!! Okay, that’s cool. Hope Alyssa’s legs are up to it! But yeah, it’s a great dress.

So I'm predicting Fabio and Sonjia to the final runway. Who's gonna be third, everyone? For some reason, I don't think it'll be Dmitry, although I like his style best. I'm thinking it's gonna be Michelle. She's taking real risks and I think the results deserve a shot at the title.
