Ep 10
The designers really want their models back. Yes, the kids were fine, but give me living clothes hanger, right? DUH DUH DUUUUUUUHHHHH!!
Just in time for the real woman challenge!
First, we are told by Alexander that he wants a win. Yeah, that'll happen. So he's either gonna win or he'll be booted. ...I'm gonna take a wild guess.
But wait! I'm almost talking over the Mary Kaye product placement, can't have that. The rep (who's the makeup artist dude) tells the designers they have to go to Washington Square Park and fish out a real-person model. Find someone who can use a makeover! The prize is a photo shoot with model in Marie Claire. Hey, pretty good prize.
So they find their models hanging out and chat them up. Their models are all pretty good looking and fairly slender. To be honest, I like it better when the models are selected in advance and one of the designers gets an insanely challenging body type - like short and square or huge boobs and they freak out. But these women all turn out to be pretty awesome, so this turns out well too.
Kini’s in the weeds. He and his model are on very different pages. Emily says she's doing something different, but still cool. Korina seems to be designing an 80s style thing, sort of Michael Jackson-y. Kini finally finds his inspiration in denim.
PRODUCT PLUGGING MARY KAYE!!! I remember Mary Kaye because the woman I babysat for made extra bucks selling it to her friends. Wasn’t MK like Avon products - sort of mass produced?
Anyway, I don’t know about the designers but I’m not terribly inspired. This is a tough challenge. You want a striking runway look, but it's gotta be wearable. Tough line to straddle. So there's designing and Mood-ing and cutting and sewing, etc.
It's Tim time! He likes Korina’s motorcycle jacket. Been there done that, no? But... but this one is blue!
Char: Tim's concerned about her look. The model’s a preschool teacher with a young daughter. Bright red hot pants may not be the way to go.
Amanda: The seams are off and Amanda is refusing to see it, but Tim lectures.
Kini: Okay.
Sean: Tim asks, Where are you in this dress?
Emily: Black dots on red background. If it’s not what the judges want, it sure is gonna be a bang.
Alexander gets The Tim Stare (tm). “You are one of the most talented designers I have ever met." (Interrupting this quote to insert a SERIOUSLY, TIM?!) "I have never said this in the history of project runway. This is the most hideous garment I have ever seen in my entire existence… it’s butt ugly.”
Wow. That's pretty harsh. But oy, the dress - it’s pretty bad. Alexander's got a black/teal plaidish thing underneath with what looks like a yellow and black fabric pattern melting over it? Oy. Alexander doesn’t agree with Tim immediately, but he has to give in to the awesome that is Tim.
The models arrive for fittings:
Korina’s likes the jacket.
Emily’s model feels princess-like. Didn’t expect it to be so fantastic!
Kini: His model loves Kini, isn’t sure of a denim dress, but trusts him.
Char: Very red outfit, very bright, but okay... we'll go with it. See what I mean about the models? They're so nice.
Sean: So sexy, cool dress, which is what she wants.
Amanda: Tight waist and the model is worried it’s not going to look nice on her. Who would look good in that fabric?
Alexander: Model feels bad he has to redo everything. But yeah, she has to agree that the yellow polka dots have to go.
So, right before the runway, Char’s model busted her zipper and Tim would have said Too bad! if these were normal models, but these are real women/guests. So in front of everyone, he asks if Char can have time to redo the model, and the designers of course say “yes” but they’re annoyed that Tim basically “saved” Char again. I don't see why he didn't tell her to "make it work!" Is he afraid she can't take off that hideous peplum jacket, toss a scarf around her hips that might actually make her decent (even if the zipper were fixed the hot pants are just all kinds of No for a kiddie teacher), and go? But fine, whatever. He's invested in Charkita, he's making her work. *sigh* Oh, Tim.
Runway:
The judges are unhappy they’re starting late. Tim won’t explain before the runway. So the judges won’t be prejudiced against Char for being given an edge - sort of. I don’t think it’s going to help her much. As if the judges don't know - Heidi can't act her way out of a paper bag. Nina looks particularly pissy - now SHE'S the one you should have gotten to grill Tim.
And the guest judge is another actress, and some model/tv personality thing. Now we're double-downing on the completely forgettable actress/personalities. These people BUY fashion, they are not in the industry! Is the industry boycotting Project Runway now and they can't find guests? Whatever.
Emily:
I don’t get the top ruffle. I would have taken the top ruffles off. But the rest of it's awesome! She really should have chosen different shoes and way dialed back on the flemenco-dancer vibe (again, getting rid of the wings on top would have helped), but it's pretty cool. And look at how great it fits the model.
Amanda:
Way too short. WAY TOO SHORT. It looks like fabric upholstrey from a den in a ranch house. In 1973. And the construction sucks.
Alexander:
This makes her look more squat than she is. The back of the skirt is way too short. Clearly, Alexander's time is up. Sometime in the middle of the episode, the producers announced that once again, Alexander is the fan favorite. I can only imagine it's because there are absolutely no other choices.
Char:
The peplum is horrible and I hate it. The look turned out fine. For a 20-year old hottie tottie. This is COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE. Seriously, what was she thinking? Otherwise, it's fine, much as Alexander's is fine. Both of these looks made me think that I would hate everything about them if I could summon any reaction at all. So, fine.
Kini:
The model looks good in this outfit but I don't like her hair with it. It all just seems too busy. I do like the over jacket. The cut offsets the denim - the sharp lines work nicely with the casual fabric. I'm with Nina - denim on denim? Meh.
Sean:
Okay, this one I like, even though I know it doesn't rise above "nice" and "off the rack." But it's nice, right?
Korina:
Blue motorcycle jacket and another short skirt with fringe. It's very well made. The jacket reminds me of Michael Jackson videos. Lots of people hate Korina, but at this point, I'm pretty sure the producers are prompting the designers to be nasty to each other to create drama, and she seems to be producing decent stuff, so whatever.
Sean is safe.
Judging:
Amanda: The model likes the look; she feels hot. Nina first wants to congratulate all the models for being here - “Please don’t take this personally.” Hahahah. Nina thinks Amanda's look is not cut well - but the vibe is good. Zac doesn’t like it at all - it feels like an outlet mall outfit. One of the personality/actress judges likes the vest, but Heidi doesn’t like it much either.
Korina: Nina likes it. Fits the model’s life, jacket is cool. Versatile. Heidi has “mixed feelings.” She loves the jacket, but it has an 80s mall vibe. The styling is all wrong.
Char: Heidi only likes the color. Not sophisticated or classy. Zac thinks it’s like a tapdance outfit. I know people hate him, but I really don't - not as long as he keeps up those comments. One of the personality/actresses thinks the jacket/peplum is unnecessary. Nina says this really doesn’t fit her professional life as a preschool teacher. (And can I add here, what is Char wearing? It’s like a deconstructed string skirt that’s come completely unstrung mid-thigh and then regathered at the knee? WTF?)
Emily: Nina thinks it’s an “origami flamingo.” The work is fabulous technically, but the ruffles are unnecessary. Zac disagrees; he thinks the costumey aspect of it works. One of the personality/actresses says the client loves it, so she gets it.
Alexander: Heidi: what happened? Two days and $200 and this is it? Nina said he was going in the right direction - the crop top is paired with a very wintery fabric - doesn’t work. One of the actresses says the retro vibe is just too basic.
Kini: Zac, it’s perfectly polished, and it’s smart he goes back to his original fabric. Heidi thinks she looks real, and not just dressed up by someone. Nina thinks the jacket is phenomenal, but for a first date? Hm.
Okay, so seriously, what did those personality/actresses contribute? AT ALL? They were completely useless and forgettable! Why don't they bring in real designers - like Tahari again, or Christian? or Von Furstenburg? why?
Moving on. During the critique, Tim related what he told Alexander. The judges are amazed. I'm wondering, though, was this really the most butt ugly thing we've ever seen on the show?
Amanda: The hair and makeup are the only modern things about the look.
Char: Does not do the model's body justice. The shorts are crazy & it’s out of character.
Korina: The jacket is lined, it’s nice. The pleats are sewn in. It’s growing on Heidi.
Emily: It fits beautifully. It’s a bold statement. Lots of ideas. Zac says it’s walking art. Too bad that's not the challenge.
Kini: Heidi thinks this is the best one. The inside of the jacket is nicely stitched. There’s an argument between Kini and Korina.
As Tim walks off, Heidi pulls him back to demand, what happened? How dare we be kept sitting ten minutes! Because that never happens when taping a tv show! So Tim tells the tale of the zipper. This comes up in decision time. The bottom is between Alexander and Charquita. Should Char be penalized for that? Duh DUH DUUUUUUHHHHH!!!
Judging
Korina wins. She’s excited! It was a good jacket. I think if Emily had left off the wings, she would have had a real shot. It was much more original.
Alexander is out. So sad, especially when he started the episode saying he really wanted a win. Sometimes I really hate how they edit these things. Alexander’s bitter about the ten minute Second Save. Everyone else is in shock.
So another episode of Project Drama comes to a close. What did you all think?
