Project Runway Season 13, Episode 7

Sep 06, 2014 13:03

Oh, lord, I really hope PR is better this week than last.

So today’s challenge! Gorgeous jewelry pieces, all in cases, up on the runway! We’re product placing the millions of gems from Chopard! I think this company did a challenge on The Face too, they sure slut around. Gorgeous evening look. Kini’s psyched. One day to pull out all the stops. Sean goes first, diamond and sapphires.

Kini - Diamond hoop earrings and a rock of a ring.

Sandhya - ruby earrings and a big chunky ring.

Samantha - watch and yellow diamond ring - fairly laid back.

Fade - dangly blue topaz? earrings?

Korina - tacky neckline piece - black chunky sparkly choker and then dangle pulled together with rubies? Or pink topaz?

Amanda - ruby heart bracelet.

Emily: Long double gold necklace with either pearls or diamonds, didn’t really get a good look.

Sean: Big gorgeous sparkly topaz and diamond necklace.

Alexander: Really amazing diamond dust choker dropping to a ruby? Or pink topaz? Chunk of a rock. That’s the only necklace that works for me in its sheer overwhelming TOO MUCH.

Okay, that is tacky, tacky, tacky gaudiness. But yeah, okay, gala jewelry. I might wear Alexander’s necklace, just because there’s something honest in its shamelessness. All the other stuff is trying too hard. Then again, most of the top designer jewelers don’t advertise on PR.

OMG is Tim bringing Char back?! He’s getting verklempt. YES I’m having an actual sentimental impulse. Apparently Tim uses his save for emotional reasons - he did the same last season, and while last season I thought it was a waste, now I actually see what the TGS is for, and I am on board. Especially since it means he won’t be able to save Amanda. Like the judges are going to dump her.

But oooooh, the Met and Charles James exhibit. The Met fashion exhibits are really amazing and IIRC the CJ exhibit was awesome (didn’t we run through that exhibit last spring azureopal? Please tell me my brain is not that off kilter). Samantha and Emily are choosing similar fabric.

I’m glad they’re featuring Char, who says she can relate to Amanda more now because they both got second chances and she can understand her desire. Because it’s All About Amanda.

Can we talk about Fade now? Hahhahahah silly me.

Samantha has “never even been to a wedding.” Good lord, what rock did you crawl out from under? You’re a designer, aren’t wedding dresses end-of-runway staples?

Kini really wants this. But with breast cuts and underwire, he is not happy. Huh, maybe he’s going to have to try this time.

Tim time!

Amanda: Jewelry is pink heart bracelet. Sheer dress, piece work, heart shapes, jumpsuit. Tim reads harlequin. Amanda grimaces, then giggles. God she’s vile.

Char: She gets the quartz bracelet and blue earrings. Tim feels like she’s an investment - and it’s looking “prim… bridal.” Gotta step it up!

…we’re flying through Tim’s consult in about two minutes and I can’t keep up. They zoomed past Fade and Emily, so I guess they’re getting passed through the runway. Dammit.

Tim thinks Kini’s looking a tad hoochie. Kini’s still not happy.

Korina is doing a blanket fabric overcoat - huh, I do really like that Native American design, but with a quilt type fabric for an “elegant gown”? She wants to do what she came here for - honey, this may NOT be the challenge for that. Well, we’ll see how it goes. Tim thinks the design is a bit off. Seams aren’t really matching. Oh, come on, sixteen hours SIXTEEN HOURS.

Sean has a simple silhouette but Tim sees all the complexities of making it simple. Okay then. Well, maybe it’ll be a nice background for the jewelry. That is kind of the point.

Samantha. Is it nothing special? She doesn’t have anything there, really. Boring!

Alexander has a scrunched-up fabric that he is draping and it could be a big hot mess.

Okay, so I have a theory about Fade: He’s just so wonderful that the judges are ignoring his work so they don’t look like they’re favoring him since they’re giving him all the wins. That’s my theory. I think it’s the only way I can take getting through this mess of a show that favors Amanda over, well, pretty much everyone else.

Kini points out that Amanda is using organza again after the last time when she had immunity and the judges hated her look but she was safe. Hm… Yeah, right. I have no hope in the judges speaking sense there. My only hope is pinned on Zac, but everyone knows he has no real power.

The jewelry/product placement is gloriously gaudy and tacky. But at least the product is relevant to the challenge, unlike that ridiculous Red Robin challenge.

Guest judge: the Chopard rep. Okay, fine.

Korina:

Oooh, I really like that overcoat. But the necklace is so ugly. Why’d she choose it? I guess its heaviness compliments the blanket fabric? I have no idea what the judges will say, but I think the risk paid off. Then, I really love that pattern style. I wish she’d kept to this all along.

Fade:

Subtle: trying not to overpower the jewel, but the dress is just too much simple… ooh, hold it, she just turned around. There is a sweet bustle flouncing around in the back of the skirt. But the bodice is wrong for a gala thing. Too sundress-y.

Char:

Okay, I like that. Tim won’t get spanked for this save. Clean, white, with a peplum, and it goes with the jewels. I like the bustle. It’s not great - there’s a bit too much at the waist, maybe, but she definitely kept Tim’s faith in her heart.

Emily:

I like that gather halfway down the skirt that’s echoed at the hem, but I don’t like the bodice. Oops, no, there’s too much going on in the back on top of the overall silhouette. Nope. It won’t be in the bottom, but it’s not great.

Samantha:

Okay, I like the blue material with the ring. But as Tim said, there’s not much to the dress.

Kini:

Chiffon overlay. The breast cups are totally off - they have nipples. The rest is nice with a Grecian feel. Structure and flow, good design and it goes with the jewelry but nothing really stands out.

Sandhya:

Nicely structured, but it’s too short and I don’t like the material pattern. It feels to day-dress-y.

Sean:

Simple sheath with a straight-line bodice. You definitely look at the necklace first, second and last. Okay. I don't like the bottom darker ruffle at the hem - it makes it looks like curtains.

Amanda:

This is bizarre. The belt completely disrupts the line. I like the general flow of the sheer overlay but it is very badly hemmed all around. Yeah, someone like L’il Kim would wear this and it would be talked about and pretty much everyone would find it tacky and awful but people wanting to seem edgy would say they like it. Heidi will love it and I’ll want to killer her.

Alexander:

Oh, no, the necklace and the dress is wrong together. The dress is way too much for that necklace, and I think it’s actually hiding that big rock of a jewel against her breastbone.

Well, it was a good show, and Heidi says just that. For sixteen hours of work.

So see, I told you, Fade’s waved through. So is Emily, Char and Sandhya.

Judging -

Kini: Structure and flowiness. Heidi loves the sheer part - she says the skirt should have been a little bit shorter - of course. The boob darts are unfortunate, but the look is great. Nina loves the earrings, the dress is a good idea. From the waist down it’s a bit of a problem in the fabric choices, but the look is wonderful.

Amanda: Heidi loves it. Told you. The judges love risk, and Nina of course wants to promote herself as being edgy so of course she says it’s wonderful. Zac thought it was one for the worst dressed list. THAT’S MY MAN. Zac is the only one with a lick of sense. The judges have a discussion about fashion can elicit different opinions. Yay, okay.

Korina: Nina loves it, wonderfully ethnic play with the exotic necklace. Zac loves it too. Yay! See, when something is great everyone loves it.

Alexander: His dress hides the ruby in the necklace. Nina says it looks like Princess Grace got stuck in the washing machine spin cycle. Heidi says, No harmony between the jewelry and dress. Yep. Zac says it’s not terrible. Nina says, yes, it is terrible! Eh, I don’t think it’s terrible, I just think it’s the wrong idea.

Samantha: Not much to the dress, not much design. Heidi says, this is a design competition! - and it’s boring. Plus, it’s not great for the classic watch and wrong color for the ring.

Sean: Nina thinks she looks stunning, good fabric, the color is good for the jewelry, very elegant. Heidi loves the design and it fits really well. Zac calls it “regal.”

Korina wins! Oh, good, that was my favorite, although I thought the necklace was tacky.

Samantha goes home. Well, more of a “not much impact” designer gone.
