PR S13 Ep 2

Aug 03, 2014 19:30

So it's been a couple of days and I have had time to think about this, and I'm afraid I still don't agree with the judges. As mmmorpheusq said in the other thread, they are clearly enjoying the hooch pre-judging, because seriously, WTF.

The challenge was unconventional materials in teams, so double whammy. The team challenge early on really stinks because one team has an immune person and that person is in the "hahahahha don't care" mode, or they just bail on the frustration of trying to make shit work with unknown diva wanna-bes this early in the game. Which Sandhya clearly was all about, but more on that later. There are a few people I've got the hairy eyeball on.

So let's get right to Amanda, whose team won, and whose design took it away. The judges were going on individual looks, but the overall coherence of the teams looks. In other words, would the same woman have a selection of places to go in this collection? they
liked the green color emphasis, and they were... honestly, I'm not sure. Impressed with the fact that the dresses were all different?

I don't know why either. Because it used hardware? Honestly, I thought the challenge is to turn non-material material into outfits that look like they're made of fabric-like elements. This looks like Amanda draped a bunch of hardware over a fairly boring shift. Without all that shit, would you wear that dress? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Also in the collection, Kristine:

The letters look gimmicky, and I don't like how they're lined up. Maybe if they'd been non-linear? I feel like I should try to read them. I do like the bodice but I don't like the color contrast of the yellow with the green.

But this is just ugly, Korina:

Ugh, the black and green is awful. Geometrical + fringe = WTF. And the shiny black contrast against the green makes it look like duct tape.

Here's the collection I personally liked best, but it only got waved through, Char:

They used tickets and CDs and had a pretty blue color theme. Char's was the weakest of the looks, I think - it was too obviously tickets. My favorite look was Mitchell's:

I'm a sucker for the strong jewel tone, but I think he did a great job of making the CDs look fit into an outfit. Notice how the CD element on the bodice of Char's dress picks up the whole look here. The two dresses are too similar in cut and really the design isn't that interesting, but I think that Kini's look was a good second design:

Too bad they didn't collaborate in thinking a third design up before they all started dressmaking. I don't know if it would have won, but it was the one I responded to most favorably in general.

I loved Samantha's look as well, though I was just as strongly not impressed with her teammates. Without teams Samantha look clearly would have won:

The skirt was used the film to suggest a single line of skirt, so that worked. I know the falling strands couldn't be helped, but they were distracting. But that top is gorgeous! The others were really not successful. I'm not sure if the aesthetic, beyond using film strips, fit together. Even more than that, their use of film reveals the weakness of the material that Samantha's manipulation managed to control better. First Emily:

I want to say the top is okay, but I'm pretty sure that's only in contrast to the bottom. Someone was commenting about the shape about the hips, but I'd be willing to say that's the least of this hot mess. And I really bet the shell look, which is the only really succcessful thing here, was all Samantha.

But look at Alexander's:

I appreciate the shape's concept, because it's one of those looks that is much better in idea than execution. It looks amazingly uncomfortable, and does not fit well at all. The fringe seems to be much more under control/intentional than Emily's, anyway. But I hate the color and the material on this. He should have kept the bottom and reimagined the top.

Next, the judges stated they loved two of the next group, but hated Angela's look, and announced in front of the entire assembley that she ruined her team's potential win. I'd say that was cruel, but Angela whines, and cries, and weeps, and refuses to compromise, so her look wasn't horrible, but it wasn't really coordinating with her team either:

It's pretty boring. It's a simple sheath with shit hanging on it. BUT SO WAS AMANDA'S. I don't get why the judges hated on it so much. And honestly, everyone was going on about Sean's look:

But I was kind of "meh." I really still haven't made my mind up about the black things. Again, for me it's one of those "good idea, could be better executed." TBH, I thought this was kind of along the lines of a weewee dress. But okay, it did look cool. I have no idea, though, why the judges found Fade's look so amazing.

The white section cuts the look in half. I do really like how he solved the problem of stringy film by looping the material so the ends don't dangle. But the bodice is really ugly, and doesn't go with the bottom half at all. Fade was impressed enough with himself for both of us, however, that's for sure. He's rather insufferable, isn't he?

And last and certainly least - the group who had the problem of one immune member, Sandhya:

Ugh, this team. First, they wanted to do futurism, as in silver and shiny and then Sandhya went off in a direction they hated but she dug in her heels. And then complained to Tim about how everyone is so meeeeaaaaan. SHUT UP SANDYHA YOU WON AND YOU HAVE IMMUNITY. DEAL WITH IT. And during the critique, Tim was basically, "none of this goes together" so they all decide to throw everything away and blindly follow Hernan? I really wish they'd followed Carrie. Her look was worse than Hernan's, but I bet she could have come up with a better general concept.

So Sandhya's look has all the frayed unfinished unkempt problems her first look had, only now she gets slammed for it. And this is so clearly the worst of the worst. But of course she's safe and waved through, so the choice for the Auf is between Hernan:

There's some sort of design, but there's no real transformation of the material and it looks tacky, unsophisticated, uncomfortable and cheap. Ugh, I really hate that slit; it lowers it all the way to the basement.

But since it had a concept of itself, in any case, and Carrie's didn't, Carrie's was the losing look:

All of the same things I said about Hernan, only winging at the bodice, badly fit at teh hips, and way, way too short.

Boy, did she bitch on the way out. Her points may be valid, but we can all agree this show isn't really about talent anymore. It's about how well a contestant deals with shit thrown at him or her, and whatever hallucinations the judges are having that particular day.

What did you all think? I know I miss a lot to be said, please be sure to bring it into the comments! What did you all think of Tim's interactions this week?
