Recently, my sister Jen was in Tesco, and noticed that they were keeping the photography magazines in the "Men's Interest" section. Now, Jen is a fairly keen photographer, and she and I were brought up not to believe in the "these things are for girls, and these are for boys" gender crap (we don't go out of our way to cross societal boundaries, but if there's something we want we don't feel constrained by perceived rules). We were also encouraged to challenge injustices (well, we were given the space/time/resources to do what we felt was Right, which was a sort of implicit encouragement).
This observation, coupled with the relevant traits, meant that an Angry Letter was sent to Tesco HQ. Jen received a reply last week, with a very amusing grovelling apology, and a promise that the relevant store would look into it.
We went into the store today (Tesco at Copdock, just outside Ipswich), and it looks as though someone has been given a bollocking, and a staff member has very hastily rearranged it. All of the groups of magazines had been moved, although none of the titles/headers had been moved with them. I can't remember everything (Jen took some photos, so might update later with more info), but these are some of the funnier ones:
- The photography is now under "Home and Leisure". So is the porn (I actually think this is amusingly accurate - it just makes me giggle a fair bit).
- Fishing is now under "Women's Interest", including the magazines on tractors.
- Children's magazines are under "Technology".
I'd be interested to know whether other Tesco stores put photography under "Men's" or whether it was store-specific. I'm also curious to see how long it takes them to organise things "properly", and how they're going to sort out headers. It'll be hilarious if they keep it this way.
