Here's a question for you: In what order should you drink alcohol? There's "beer then wine and you'll be fine etc", as well as "never mix grape and grain" - but is there any truth in it? I've always figured that you should drink alcohol in ascending order of percentage of alcohol contained, but have no idea if there's any truth in any of the ( Read more... )

For me how drunk I get depends more on how much I've eaten recently (too little and it goes straight to my head, too much and I feel drowsy)and how much I've drunk recently - after a couple of weeks I've noticeably lost tolerance...

Also, the order doesn't matter so much compared to how much I mix things, I don't know why as ethanol is ethanol is ethanol, I'd theorise that it's what you drink with it could make you absorb it more (eg a sweet drink could prompt more insulin release so your cells take in more ethanol?) I'm afraid I can't offer much more scientific reasoning than that. Let me know if you find an article on it in pubmed o/

Beer then wine, man feels fine.
Wine then beer, man feels queer!

Apart from that I've always stuck to wine and spirits or spirits and beer. Well except for house parties when I've been terribly hung over the next day after making cocktails of the three :P

Way I do it is always *increase* alcohol content. Beer, wine, spirits, and never go back down the ladder when you've reached a new stage.

Works like a charm unless I'm drinking Pimms - in which case, God help me whether I've mixed or not. I'm sure you remember Spain...

Don't have problems with mixing as long as I'm prepared. Lots of alcohol-absorbing food and water between drinks and a few peanuts work wonders!

And here is a random google find or two for you :)

I've got the impression (over time) that all of it (mixing drinks, order of drinks etc.) is pretty much rubbish. The important factors are (or, appear to be for me): food (without it, outlook grim), quantity of alcohol drunk, quantity of water drunk.

I get the feeling that the 'mixing drinks == bad' thing comes from the way that, if you've gotten through (possibly multiple rounds of) several different drinks, chances are you've taken in more alcohol than 'usual'.

Still, I would be interested in seeing more conclusive evidence either for or against.
