Chapter 3 ----- Chapter 5

---

Heechul paused at his computer in his office, grading quizzes.  His phone was going off beneath a pile of papers and he sighed in annoyance. He still had a few essays to finish before he could hand them all back and now the quizzes as well. He was running short on time and he needed to prepare for his lecture for the next day on top of everything else.

He looked down at the number after digging the cell phone out of the pile. Lee Hyukjae? What did he want?  He flipped the phone open angrily, “Ya, what is it-”

“They took him!”

“Huh?”

“We were closing up the shop. Donghae stepped out first-they came in a black car-two big men pulled him inside and drove off-tried to run after them-couldn’t keep up-hyung what do I do!?” Eunhyuk was near tears.

Heechul’s chest began pounding and aching as he leapt up from his seat. “Someone took Donghae?” His voice was faint and shrill. “Who did? What else can you tell me about them? What about the license plate?”

“I didn’t check-”

“Dammit-keep calling him. I’m coming to Korea.”

“Hyungnim-”

Heechul had already hung up and was calling Zhou Mi, “They tracked the account to Donghae. I thought you said that couldn’t happen!” He was panicking now, and his chest constricted painfully. He clutched at it, leaning against the wall. He let out a few shaky breaths.

“Ge, are you alright? Ge, what’s wrong?” Zhou Mi sounded worried.

“Get me a plane ticket to Korea!” Heechul snapped, before closing the phone and slumping down against the wall, teeth gritted in pain. Donghae, Donghae, stupid I told you not to get involved. What if they hurt you? Donghae…

---

Donghae found himself sitting in the middle of a room in the basement level of Yumyeong Industries. He hadn’t been tied up, which surprised him, but he’d been forced into a chair in a sparsely furnished storage room and told to wait.

He recognized the two men that had grabbed him as Park Jungsu and Cho Kyuhyun’s bodyguards: Lee Sungmin and Kim Youngwoon. He wasn’t certain why he’d been brought in but he knew that it had to do with Heechul.

Were they going to try and find his hyung to kill him? Revenge? I knew it wasn’t over. Hyung knew this would happen, didn’t he? He knew that when Heechul found out he’d be angry. He’d think it was his fault if something happened to Donghae. Donghae would just have to make sure he came back safe and sound.

They wouldn’t kill him, right? Park Jungsu and Cho Kyuhyun weren’t their fathers…right?

He wondered how they’d gotten him there without anyone noticing. He hoped someone had noticed. If there was a witness it would mean that they wouldn’t be able to harm him without someone going to the police-unless that witness worked at Yumyeong. They couldn’t go against their new director. Dammit he was so screwed-

The door was flung open and Cho Kyuhyun stormed up to him, Park Jungsu coming behind at a more sedate pace. Kyuhyun didn’t stop even when Sungmin raised his hand for him to. He grabbed Donghae’s shirt, pulling him up out of the chair. “He’s alive, isn’t he?”

Donghae tried to continue smiling, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Where is he!? He’s alive, I know it. Where it Kim Heechul? Answer me!” He shook Donghae roughly.

Donghae, who had smiled cheerfully before, grabbed Kyuhyun’s wrist and twisted, making the younger boy howl in pain and let go.

“Kyuhyun!” Sungmin stepped forward, ready to attack, but Leeteuk moved to block him.

“Calm down everyone.” He turned to Donghae, whose visage was stony. “Please…let’s explain.”

“I don’t have anything I need to explain to you.” Donghae shook his head, “Neither does Heechul hyung.”

“Hyung?” Kyuhyun’s brow furrowed, and then his eyes narrowed. “I remember you. You were there that day. You helped Director Gam or whatever the hell his name is get Kim Heechul into his car, didn’t you?”

Donghae swallowed, remaining silent.

“Ya! Answer me you idiot! I’ll kill you!”

“No one is killing anyone.” Jungsu said sternly, grabbing Kyuhyun’s shoulder and pulling him back. “Kyuhyun, why are you so angry? Heechul is alive, that’s a good thing. We can-”

“This changes everything!” Kyuhyun snapped back, “He’s not dead. He betrayed us. He’s a fucking bastard and I’m going to-”

“Don’t talk about hyung that way.” Donghae hissed out, and they all turned in surprise at the mellow looking man. He was staring with as much anger as he seemed able to muster. “You don’t have any right to talk about hyung like that.”

“What the hell are you talking about? Do you know what the hell he did?” Kyuhyun ground out, “Eh?” Sungmin had grabbed him and was pulling him back away from Donghae. Kangin was standing protectively behind Leeteuk, gaze hardened and serious.

“Your fathers cheated Heechul’s family and took over the industry. They renamed it Yumyeong.” Donghae growled, “You’re the ones that don’t know anything at all.”

“The old company was in ruins! Our fathers saved it!” Kyuhyun yelled back. He’d been told the story countless of times. That Heechul hyung’s family had moved out because of bad business. They’d gone bankrupt and had handed the business over to Director Park and Director Cho before moving to the United States to start anew.

“Your fathers used their names and influence to force the company into bankruptcy. They told Heechul’s father, ‘Don’t take it so personally…it’s just business.” Donghae swallowed, feeling tears spring up to his eyes. He didn’t know why he was telling them this. Was it his anger at seeing the hatred in Cho Kyuhyun’s gaze? Or was it the silent hope masked by hurt in Park Jungsu’s?

“You’re lying-” Kyuhyun began.

“You’re LIVING IN HIS HOUSE!” Donghae yelled at Kyuhyun. “That was his home! Your father moved in the day after he kicked Heechul and his mother out!”

There was a long moment of silence. Leeteuk stared in shock, eyes wide and face pale. Kyuhyun was panting, breathing heavily as he glared. He shook Sungmin off but didn’t move to attack Donghae. Leeteuk simply stood where he was.

Kyuhyun was living in Heechul’s old home…hadn’t that been a gift from Heechul’s father before leaving? That was what his father had told him. A father that wouldn’t give his life for yours, a voice in the back of his mind sneered.

Suddenly the door was thrown open and all the people inside turned to see Siwon stumble in, “What are you doing?” he yelled at Kyuhyun and Leeteuk. “This is kidnapping! It’s all over the news!”

“What?” Kangin stared incredulously. “How could anyone know-”

“They don’t know that it’s Yumyeong, but someone saw you pulling Lee Donghae into your car. His boyfriend was working there and saw you do it, so they’ve identified him as the victim.” Siwon looked on hopelessly, “What has gotten into you?”

“We needed to know.” Leeteuk whispered. “…that he was alive.”

Kyuhyun merely clenched his hands into fists. “This isn’t any of your business, Siwon hyung.”

“Hyung is my hyung too!” Siwon shook his head furiously, “So it does concern me.”

“How can you call him hyung after all he’s done?” Kyuhyun gave a bitter laugh. “YOU CAN CALL THAT MONSTER HYUNG!?”

“Calm down!” Leeteuk shouted, and the room went silent at his uncharacteristic outburst. Leeteuk seemed startled himself, but he took a step forward, grabbing Kyuhyun into a one-armed hug. “Kyuhyun-ah, you have to calm down. Let Lee Donghae-ssi explain everything.” Even if he didn’t want to know the truth…because he was afraid of what it would reveal.

“I don’t care what you say. I’m going to kill him.” Kyuhyun growled, struggling out of Leeteuk’s hold. Sungmin watched Kyuhyun helplessly, knowing that there was nothing he could do to change how he was feeling. Kangin rested a hand on Leeteuk’s shoulder. Siwon watched this all before turning at the sound of Donghae’s dry laughter.

Donghae was staring at the scene in front of him through narrowed eyes, “Heh. Go ahead and try. It wouldn’t be the first time your families wanted him dead.” His tone was bitter, an odd contrast to the usually cheerful and kind man.

“What do you mean?” Jungsu whispered, uncertain.

“Your fathers hired men to kill Heechul hyung and his mother when they fled to China. His mother died when they cut the break lines on the taxi they were riding in.”

Kyuhyun stilled. “I got them in a car accident when I was young.” Those scars…no it was a lie. It was all a lie. This boy was simply helping Heechul in his revenge. He couldn’t be telling the truth.

Donghae continued, swallowing to wet his dry throat.  “When he didn’t die, they sent more people. All because they didn’t want a loose end coming back to be a nuisance and claim what was rightfully his…if you try and kill hyung, I’ll stop you. I don’t care how nice of people you are, I won’t let you hurt him.”

“Who are you to talk like this, huh?” Kyuhyun scoffed angrily, trying to remain firm in his hatred. “As if you know hyu-Kim Heechul better than we do.” He motioned to Leeteuk and Siwon.

“My father was part of the security team that protected hyung’s father.” Donghae whispered. “He was fired when someone blamed a mistake on him. Heechul hyung made his father hire him back and proved his innocence all to make sure my mother and I would be ok.” Donghae let out a small laugh, “He said…he said it was because my mother made the best kimbap.” He continued to laugh through his tears. “I never got to meet any of you back then, but he told me about you. If none of this had happened, if his parents weren’t dead, I would be to hyung what Lee Sungmin-ssi is to you, or Kim Youngwoon-ssi is to you.” Donghae looked at Kyuhyun and Leeteuk. “That was my spot.”

His gaze was serious. “You really don’t know my hyung at all. Don’t you dare try and touch him. I will kill you.”

Sungmin let out a small growl in the back of his throat and pushed Kyuhyun behind him, but Kyuhyun shook him off. “Tell me where he is.”

“My hyung has always protected me, even when it was my job to protect him.” Donghae whispered, “I’m going to fulfill my promise to hyung’s appa and umma. I’m not telling you where he is.”

“Then we’ll keep you here until you do.” Kangin sighed, leaning against the door.

“That’s enough.” Siwon sighed, looking a bit agitated. “There’s no reason you should be doing this. This is illegal. Let Donghae-ssi go.”

That was when Leeteuk’s phone went off. He flipped it open, “Hello?” He listened for a few moments, and his visage become solemn. “Alright. Thank you.” He hung up and swallowed.

“Who was it?” Sungmin murmured questioningly.

“Lee Donghae-ssi’s lawyer just arrived. They’re going to press charges of kidnap and assault if we don’t release him right now.”

Donghae blinked. Lawyer? He didn’t have a lawyer. Who could it be? He didn’t know but he was suddenly glad that they’d appeared and that this lawyer had somehow known where he was. He didn’t know what he’d do if they tried to use force. He’d been trained in hand-to-hand and martial arts-he could probably shoot a gun better than Heechul hyung’s Chinese dongsaengs-but that didn’t mean he could take out both Kim Youngwoon and Lee Sungmin-not to mention Choi Siwon who he knew took tae kwon do and Korean kickboxing.

“We can’t just let him go.” Kyuhyun gestured to Donghae desperately. “Hyung!” He looked from Leeteuk to Siwon. “Please we just need a little more time.”

“Time you don’t have,” Came the cool drawl from the doorway. The well-dressed man stepped inside with a cold smile, “My name is Kim Kibum, and I’m here representing Lee Donghae-ssi. If you don’t want us to press criminal charges I suggest you let him go immediately.”

“Who let you in-” Kangin took a step forward, but Kibum seemed unfazed. He simply looked around the storage room.

“You threw my client into the back of a vehicle and dragged him into a basement closet. And I heard outside the door that you threatened to kill Kim Heechul, my other client. That’s assault.” Kibum’s smile didn’t waver. “You’re looking at several charges here.”

“If Kim Heechul wants to charge us with assault he’ll have to appear in court.” Kyuhyun snapped, “I look forward to it. Bring him.”

Kibum laughed softly, “I can lock you up before we even have to get to that charge. Kidnapping is a Class A felony.” Kibum grabbed Donghae and turned him toward the door, patting his back, “Let’s go, Donghae-ssi. I have a car waiting.”

Donghae nodded and the door shut behind them with a click.

“How can you let him go like that!?” Kyuhyun shouted at Kangin, who had opened the door for them. “He knows where Heechul is!”

“What you did was illegal.” Siwon stared at him coldly, “Kyuhyun-ah, Jungsu hyung, I’m disappointed in both of you.”

“What about you, huh? You’re the one that saved him, you should know where he is!” Kyuhyun grabbed Siwon and tried to shake him, but the difference in height, build, and strength made it impossible. He simply let out a shaky breath and let go after a few attempts. Siwon remained standing where he was.

“My father covered up the death of Kim Chanho.” Siwon finally bit out.

Kyuhyun and Leeteuk stared at him incredulously. Leeteuk finally spoke, “His death, you mean-”

“Your fathers were responsible. That’s all I know.” Siwon whispered, before heading for the door and opening it. “Lee Donghae-ssi wasn’t lying and neither was Heechul hyung.” The door closed behind him with a definite click, leaving the four men inside more confused than ever.

---

“Kim Heechul called me and sent me over.” Kim Kibum continued to give his cool smile as he led Donghae out of the building and toward a black vehicle. “Where would you like me to drop you off?”

“The coffee shop down on fifth street. La Dolce.” Donghae swallowed, before reaching for his phone. He flipped it open and saw the number of missed calls-three fourths of them were from Heechul. “I need to call my hyung and tell him I’m safe.”

Kibum nodded as a stocky man exited the car and stood with the door open, waiting for them.

Donghae dialed Heechul quickly.

“Ya! Lee Donghae!” Heechul sounded like he was crying. “Is that you? What the hell is going on-”

“I’m ok, hyung.”

“What do you mean ok? I called Kim Kibum. He came and got you, right? Aish, Hangeng and Zhou Mi wouldn’t let me come back to Korea to get you myself and Kibum was closer so-you idiot I told you not to get involved!”

Donghae smiled softly to himself. “Hyung I’m fine, really.” He didn’t want to worry Heechul or any of the others. Besides, he knew that the directors and their bodyguards didn’t know where Heechul was so they wouldn’t be able to find him.

Donghae wouldn’t let them.

“Are you sure? No one has come? Ya, you should stick with Hyukjae alright? Get him on the phone I need to talk with him.”

“Hyung I’m not going to let you threaten him into being my bodyguard.”

“He’s your boyfriend, what else is he good for but protection and sex?”

“HYUNG!” Donghae huffed, and he couldn’t help but smile. He wanted Heechul to know it was alright, to see that everything was ok. He could hear the fear and guilt in his hyung’s voice and he felt horrible for being the cause of it. He really was the worst bodyguard ever. He’d never been able to protect his hyung. He’d always been shielded instead. Heechul had refused to let him come to China, had told him to get a good education and job and that because Heechul wasn’t who he used to be, Donghae didn’t have to be who he had been told to be either.

“Donghae…Hae just…” Heechul’s voice broke on the other end before he took a few breaths and then continued, “Stay safe, alright? Go home with Eunhyuk and stay there. Don’t worry about anything else. Don’t go out alone. Just…stay safe.”

“Ok hyung.” Donghae whispered. “I’m sorry.”

Heechul laughed, “Why are you sorry? It isn’t your fault.” It’s mine.

“I’ll call you later tonight, ok hyung? To tell you that I got home safely.”

“Ok. Thanks.” And the line went dead.

---

“You can’t do this, you don’t even know where he is.” Leeteuk stood in his friend’s room, watching as Kyuhyun went from the closet to the suitcase that lay on his bed, arms full of clothing.

“I’ve already got the ticket.” Kyuhyun muttered, grabbing a jacket from the rack.

“We don’t know where he is,” Leeteuk repeated desperately.

“He has to be in China. If I can get a hold of that account file that Jongwoon-ssi found I could maybe find out where the files and money that had been transferred to that account came from.” Kyuhyun was stuffing clothes into his suitcase. “I’m positive he’s in China.”

“China is a large country.” Jungsu pointed out tiredly. He knew that deep down he wanted to find Heechul too, but he was trying to comfort himself with the simple knowledge that Heechul was alive out there somewhere, probably living happily.

What could they do even if they went to China? What if they did find Heechul? Siwon’s shocking news from earlier was still rolling around in his head and he was trying to sort everything out. His father was responsible for Kim Chanho’s death. His father had tried to kill Heechul. His father had stolen the life Kim Heechul was meant to have. His father…Leeteuk swallowed.

His father was a liar.

“Don’t you think we should let Heechul hyung live in peace now?” Leeteuk whispered finally, “Haven’t our families done enough to him?”

“Don’t call him hyung.” Kyuhyun snapped, “I want answers. I want the truth. I want him to say it. They’re all lying. I won’t believe any of it.” Kyuhyun shook his head.

“Will you believe it if he tells you the same thing?” Leeteuk asked wearily.

“He’s a liar, a fucking liar. Why should I believe what he says?”

“Then what’s the point? Are you really doing this because of what Heechul did to us? Did you really not love him?”

“I loved Hee-Sook!” Kyuhyun ground out, fingers clenched around the fabric of a shirt. “Not Kim Heechul. He’s a man. I don’t like men.”

“Is that what this is about?”

“How can you be so calm?” Kyuhyun stared at him incredulously. “He was a guy?”

“I fell in love with that person. Gam Xi Che, Kim Heechul hyung, they’re the same.” Leeteuk reached out and ruffled Kyuhyun’s hair, giving a sad smile. “That didn’t change, even after the revenge. Love isn’t something that is determined by male and female.”

“You’re like a bad late night drama.” Kyuhyun muttered in defense, swatting Leeteuk’s hand away. He went silent, but he continued to fill his suitcase.

Leeteuk sighed, “Are you sleeping over at my apartment tonight?” He still hadn’t told Kyuhyun that it was Heechul’s old place. He didn’t think he would.

“Yes.”

“Good, you can help me pack.” Leeteuk murmured, pulling out his phone, “Kangin? Get you and I tickets for Hong Kong.”

“Ya, Leeteuk, are you crazy?” Kangin called over the other end. “Who is going to take care of the company?”

“Ryeowook-ssi can handle it. He’s competent and I was planning on giving him a raise anyway.” Leeteuk answered, ignoring Kyuhyun’s surprised gaze that seemed glued to his face.

“None of us speak Chinese.” Was Kangin’s only response after that.

Leeteuk paused, “Make that three tickets. Siwon needs a vacation anyway.”

---

The moment Heechul had learned that Donghae was safe he’d come straight home, mixed himself a Bloody Mary, and shut himself up in the music studio. Zhou Mi had pouted because he’d known that Heechul was mad at him and had taken to whining to Henry in the living room about how his ge didn’t love him anymore.

Hangeng knew that Zhou Mi was feeling responsible for Donghae’s abduction and was trying his hardest to keep the Korean boy safe. He’d probably gone through a hundred phone calls after he’d heard that Donghae was alright. Hangeng didn’t doubt that Donghae’s apartment was going to be more secure than the Blue House by the time he was done with it.

Henry had panicked when he’d heard about Donghae’s abduction. Luckily he’d only gotten the news after it had already been resolved, saving him a bit of heartache. He’d come home from school to Zhou Mi yelling into the phone and Hangeng pacing back and forth, calling over his own phone to Heechul, telling him to calm down. Then Henry had run off to go and get some of Heechul’s favorite foods to comfort him. He hadn’t returned yet.

When Heechul had walked through the door he was pale and shaking. He refused the pain medication that Hangeng had tried to give him and threw the bottle to the ground with a soft, “I don’t need them. I’m fine,” even though they could all tell he was in pain. He’d stumbled to the bar to fix his drink and then holed himself up in the music studio. They’d been listening to the music filtering through the house ever since.

Hangeng had finally had enough and had gone to the door with the pain medication in one hand and a glass of water in the other.

Heechul’s hands ghosts over the keys and Hangeng stood in the doorway, listening as the older boy played a familiar song. Brahm’s No 4. He’d perfected the piece because no matter when he played, he always played that song. He’d taken lessons since the moment he’d been able to walk out of the hospital. He’d told the others that it was because now that he was through with revenge he should be able to do things he enjoyed.

When Hangeng heard Heechul play, he knew that Jungsu was the real reason. It made him angry when he watched that sad, slow smile spread across Heechul’s face as he played songs with a skill half from practice, half from inherent ability. It made Hankyung move a little harder the next time they had sex. Touch and grip and mark Heechul as his when he knew in his heart that he wasn’t.

He was behind him before he knew it, nose brushing along the underside of Heechul’s jaw. The music faded into silence and Hangeng opened his eyes to see that Heechul was staring down at his hands on the keys.

“Hangeng?” Heechul questioned softly, shifting on the bench. He turned to look Hangeng in the eye. “What is it?”

Hangeng captured his lips before he could say anymore. It was a hungry, possessive kiss, one that would leave bruised lips and bite marks. He grabbed Heechul’s legs, hooking them around his waist and hoisting the other man up to place him atop the piano.

Heechul’s skin was flushed and warm beneath his shirt-a simple button-down-and he pulled the ends out from where they’d been tucked neatly in Heechul’s pants. He heard Heechul let out a small groan as Hangeng’s fingers slid around the edge, his thumb running circles over the brass button that was keeping Heechul’s pants up.

Heechul’s heartbeat was pounding in his ears. He could hear how erratic it was-that telltale, painful pause-as it beat against his ribcage. It was loud, the sound drowned out everything else. Three beats and a pause, a horrible sickening pause that made Hangeng fear it wouldn’t start up again, and then it would continue normally. That sound was all Hangeng heard these days.

A slender-fingered hands pressed hard against his chest, separating them. “Hangeng.” Heechul gasped out, “Not here. Please not here.”

Hangeng paused, panting heavily. He could feel Heechul’s warm breath on his face-it smelled like the alcohol he’d been drinking earlier. Hangeng knew why Heechul didn’t want to continue. The piano…this was Jungsu’s place.

His hands fell limply to his side, useless, and he felt angry and guilty at the same time.

Heechul sensed it and touched his arm tentatively, “Hangeng…”

“Sorry.” All Hangeng seemed to do these days was apologize.

“It’s ok.” Heechul murmured, resting his forehead on Hangeng’s shoulder. They stayed that way for a few minutes, listening to the sound of each other breathing. Then they heard the apartment door open and Henry announced his arrival. “I’m home! I brought donuts!”

Hangeng took a step back and Heechul slipped off of the piano just as Henry opened the door and poked his head in.

“Hey, did you hear? I have donuts.”
