you know how you will have an album for years and kinda listen to it occasionally and be all enh about it, and then you listen to it again after a year, when you've grown and changed and omg it's actually really good and you listen to it on repeat for a while?
that's what i'm doing with Seventh Tree today. I haven't liked Goldfrapp really since Felt Mountain. And this is totally different, but I really enjoy it.
i baked perfect madeleines today. perfect. i had just enough ingredients to make one batch and was terrified i would fuck it up. I burnt the first batch of butter; luckily you buy unsalted butter by the pound, so i had enough to start over. then i poured the toasted butter through a filter, directly over the lemon zest. it sizzled and by god it was the most amazing smell. that's when i knew my hard work would pay off. beyond my wildest dreams.
there is no wrapping paper so everything is wrapped in brown paper bags all cut up, and i drew fancy renditions of peoples initials in prismacolor pencils or in Poppy's case, an opium poppy, and in the Shark's... well, guess.
so everyone gets booze and tiny cakes for christmas. all wrapped in brown paper.
this year's year in review post will be too short for it's own post, so here: it was the Year of Braising. I learned how to use a cast-iron enameled skillet to cook absolutely everything under the sun. Consequently, life became delicious. Then I got a kitchenaid mixer and joel gained twenty pounds, pretty much all in cookies and cupcakes. I learned I love oysters and bellinis and red wine. I tried to get through In Search of Lost Time in one year and failed miserably, but read more books than I can count. I remembered how to draw and sing. I have fallen pathetically and deeply in platonic like with a coworker who keeps me at arm's length. I killed many houseplants; we will not be getting pets or children any time soon. I have learned how to end a fight well with neither side apologizing. I got promoted. I fell disastrously ill. I have mostly recovered.
aaaaaaaand that's my christmas! now i go pack, drink rum, and cook dinner.
