This month's challenge at
hc_bingo is to create reclists on a theme, or a few themes. I picked "Love potion/spell gone wrong."

The course of true love never did run smooth. Add a potion in the mix, and things are bound to go wrong. 15 works in almost as many fandoms. Please note: Warnings (or a 'choose not to warn' message) are with each story but there are dubcon hints, at least, for almost all of these stories. Ratings vary too.

I'll start with the simplest version of the 'love potion gone wrong' theme: A spell is cast, or mixed, and things don't go according to plan.

Perhaps the oldest example of the trope is Tristan and Iseult, where a knight and his king's betrothed share a love potion meant for the lady and the king. Redfiona's short, angry fic looks at the situation from Iseult's perspective:

European legend, Iseult/Tristan
This Fire Is Out of Our Control

Usually, as with Tristan and Iseult, a spell ends up in the wrong hands. Rubberbutton's Love Potion #9 finds Merlin mixing a potion with some very dangerous results:

BBC Merlin, Arthur/Merlin, Morgana/Merlin
Love Potion #9

Sometimes the spell is cast deliberately to cause chaos or pain. In vainglorious' fic "Super Love Spell," Loki's magic goes exactly as planned, and that's the problem.

Avengers/Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony/Pepper (real), Tony/others (love spell)
Super Love Spell

Fred falls victim to the whims of a bookseller in "Done in the Name of Love."

Angel the Series, Fred Burkle/Lilah Morgan
Done in the Name of Love"

In "Kitsune" by
toscaskiss, a young woman meets a stranger and finds herself moving almost against her will:

Rurouni Kenshin/Weiss Kreuz, Schuldig/OC
Kitsune

But the spell doesn't always hit its intended mark. In "The Bijozakura Seal" by
megyal, Kakashi and Iruka are hit with a spell made for another pair, and are forced to deal with the consequences.

Naruto, Kakashi Hakate/Umino Iruka
The Bijozakura Seal

In "I Had It All Planned Out" by
entangled_now, the spell hits one target - Stiles - but the rest doesn't go to plan. (To put it mildly.)

Teen Wolf, Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
I Had It All Planned Out

Sometimes it's unclear where the spell came from or how to stop it, and these are often the most unhinged (and kinky) stories on the theme. Zilchtastic's kink meme fill "Our Little Problem" is a perfect example. Hakkai has an itch only his friends can scratch.

Saiyuki, Son Goku/Sha Gojyo/Cho Hakkai/Genjo Sanzo
Our Little Problem

Does the woman in
louiselux's "Burning" realize that Gojyo and Sanzo aren't there for aphrodisiacs? It's hard to say, but they end up with a solid dose anyway:

Saiyuki, Sha Gojyo/Genzo Sanzo
Burning

Sometimes the caster's intentions are pure, as when Greta asks the maids for a love potion to make her fathers happy. In saber shadowgal's funny fic, things still don't go to plan.

Kyou Kara Maou!, Wolfram von Bielefeld/Shibuya Yuuri
The Love Potion

A love spell gone wrong might also be the unintended consequence of something else, as when one of Hank's attempts to 'cure' his mutation goes horribly, delightfully wrong. Misterkevo's fic examines what happens when everyone chasing after you has superpowers.

X-Men First Class, Hank McCoy/Alex Summers
you better run away, baby (before I put my spell on you)

There are also love potion stories that play with the complicated relationships between characters, the tangle of their emotions creating as strong a spell as any potion might.

"Tricks the Memory Plays" by
file_five is a perfect example, using the tangles of obsession and magic between the two leads to strengthen the story.

X/1999, Seishirou/Subaru
Tricks the Memory Plays

"Nothing Else to Say" by shieldmaiden plays a slightly different trick with its characters, but the effect is similar; when you work so deeply inside someone's mind, you can't always control the consequences.

Inception, Saito/Robert Fischer
Nothing Else to Say

Last but not least, there's another way a spell can go wrong: When your opponent overpowers you. Christian Grey thinks he's cast a spell of sorts, but things go sour quickly when he's confronted with a real sorcerer.

50 Shades of Grey/Yami no Matsuei, Christian Grey/Muraki Kazukata
Six Degrees of Separation

Lindz's humor fanvid "Kirk and the Love Potion" has a funnier take on counteracting a spell:

Star Trek: The Original Series, Kirk/Spock
