Title: That Strange and Subtle Magic of Birthdays
Fandom: Yu Yu Hakusho
Pairing: Yusuke/Kurama
Rating: PG-13, for a brief allusion to a sexual relationship.
A/N: Finally, the last part in a story that ran away with me. Inspired by a number of sources, most notably the short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye".
“Yusuke!”
For a horrifying moment, Kurama is sure that he’s right, that the strange dream - the details of which are already fading, even as he grips Yusuke’s shoulder and shakes - was his subconscious knowledge that somehow, Yusuke has died in the night. For a moment, he’s convinced that is why the Spirit Detective will not wake.
And then Yusuke groans, rolls onto his back, and opens one deep brown eye to glare balefully up at Kurama from his place in the narrow bed.
“What?” he rasps out, voice thick with sleep. Suddenly, Kurama feels rather foolish. After all, it was just a dream.
“I…had a dream,” he says feebly, and then quickly amends the statement. “A nightmare. You…you were dead.”
Yusuke stares at him a moment longer, then rolls his eyes - Kurama sees the other move beneath the closed lid - and turns back onto his side.
“Not again,” he complains, burrowing deeper into the blankets. “I’ve had quite enough of that already. And besides,” Yusuke pauses, glancing back over his shoulder, “even if I was dead, it’s not like that’s stopped me before.”
Kurama stares at Yusuke’s back for a long while - long enough for the Detective’s breathing to even out into the patterns of sleep once more - before he finally lets the smile break through.
“No,” he says, softly, settling back in beside his lover.
“No, I suppose it hasn’t.”
And with that, it's done. It's been a crazy experience, but definitely a rewarding one. Thanks to everyone who stuck with it, and I hope I've managed to give you what you were looking for.
As always, comments and criticisms are extremely welcomed.
