Bookflog: The Rite by Richard Lee Byers (Chapters 5-8)

Right now, I think I'm in the middle of the doldrums of the book, possibly in the doldrums of the trilogy. I hate middle sections... As far as I can tell, no one really did anything through this section. Okay, okay, there were a few fight scenes, some intrigue... but really, NOTHING MOVED.

Chapters 5-8

Dorn and Will were betrayed by their orgeish temporary allies (which should not have been a surprise to them) and are now holed up inside one of Sammasters's happy study places. They are pretty beat up. Unfortunately they haven't gotten around to checking their ruins out yet. Lazy jerks! Heal up and start moving the plot you good for nothing scallywags!

Taegan hasn't really gotten any headway in finding the spy he and Rilitar are pretty sure are in their midst and their most recent attempt to flush the dastard out has cost them another friendly mage. Much as I like the way the cultural differences are being handled, I still would like those to be in service to dragging the plot forwards some. Right now my theory is that either the cloaked wizard is responsible ( because why should anyone trust someone who won't show their face... besides wouldn't it be fun if Sammaster were in their midst?) or Rilitar (because like Elaith Craulnobyr, no one suspects the elf).

Dorn, Raryn, Kara and Chatulio have found their way to the Monastary of the Yellow Rose and have spent most of their time fighting chromatic wyrms rather than looking up lore. Raryn seems to be getting a bit shorted on face time as he doesn't have a comic foil working with him, he doesn't have a love interest anywhere in sight and really just seems to be there. I hate character isolationism.Nothing major really happened on the plotline front, but Chatulio did just break off and might have single handedly subverted all the chromatic dragons assaulting the monastery. He's also feeling the rage more keenly.

The biggest development was in the romantic subplot. Dorn and Kara attempted to have a nice time in bed but were inconveniently interrupted by the Rage. Poor things. Dorn might have the Lonely Hedgehog's dilemma going on, but Kara has the Very Hungry Tiger's problem. For those of you not familiar with the idiom from Baum's Oz books, the Very Hungry Tiger's problem is that the only thing in the entire universe that will assuage his growling tummy is to eat a human baby. The Tiger doesn't want to nom babies because he knows that he couldn't handle the guilt afterwards. Kara would like to have an awesome night of naked wrestling with Dorn, but if she does, she runs the very high chance of losing out to the Rage. To make things worse, Dorn's taking it as an indication that the universe will never let him find someone to be happily intimate with. Somehow the phrase “That really sucks” fails to encompass the degree of unhappy the situation is.

All right, the next section had better move or I'm going start writing alternate lines for this.
