The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett

In my general pack-rat type way, I picked up The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. I really needed something lighter that the collection of novellas I'd been reading before and this looked like it would fit the part quite nicely.

What's 6 inches tall and can stop a horse with his face? )

I love this book, I have to say. Pratchett gets girls, which is unusual, and in Tiffany he's provided a wonderful new heroine to stand beside the great 19thc ones.

I think part of it is that he takes the tack of "how would a person react to such and such" rather than "how would a girl react to such and such." Since he's trying to make a fictional person rather than the "intrepid girl who has to win her brother back" she comes off as a much better balanced character.

That he seems to be writing a character as a person more than anything else and making sure that that person has to change in order to succeed at their goals is something that I find rather out of the ordinary to begin with. That he's pulling it off in a believable manner with a girl is even more awesome. :)
