*amused*
I'm chatting with my little cousin (well, 14 year old cousin) on MSN and we got onto the subject of prank calls. I am very guilty of making a whole lot of them but there is one that really stands out to me and as I was talking to Sabrina, the whole came back to me.
For whatever reason I decided to adopt a very bad Spanish accent. I'm not that bad at adopting accents, especially after I've been around people who are speaking with that particular accent, but this was in a class of it's own. It was so abhorrent and awful and a complete insult to any Spaniard. ;)
Armed with my telephone book (for reference) I decided to call some random (Eastern European, it turned out to be) person who lived in my area and ask to speak to someone called Maria. I'm pretty sure it was the first call that I made that I got this wonderfully accented (and helpful) woman. My plan of action was to ask for Maria, hang up, call again and ask for Maria, hang up, call again and ask for Maria, not hang up. I remember giving this huge long spiel about how I had just arrived from Madrid and I was stuck at the airport, waiting for "Maria". The poor woman was all "There's no Maria here" but I would insist that there was and, with my trusty telephone book, quote the address and whatnot. It was great. If I remember correctly, I even hung up and waited awhile so that "I" could go and look around the airport for Maria.
It got to the point that this poor woman was looking through phone books to find me a hotel (no internet then - well, not like now) which I shot down because I didn't know anything about Sydney. Silly, really. But it worked. In the end, after I had insisted on getting a cab straight to the house, she offered to come and pick me up!!! Lordy knows where she was going to take me or whether she ever turned up but I thanked her and hung up the phone, died laughing and left it at that. I think overall it went for about 20 minutes with my mate Mel practically dying with laughter next to me.
I still don't know how I managed to keep focused and not get giggly but it was too good. Slight guilt but hey. I was probably around 15 and it was a laugh. I just can't help but grin if I think of her going all the way to the airport to find "me". Poor woman. She was so nice and helpful. Heheheh.
