Nick Cutter’s eyes squinted from his back seat of rows and rows of chairs. Of course, his chair was cold on his backside and his breath- in a small white cloud- surrounded his face. In the distance, he could make out a head of white-blonde hair and a slim body covered by a leather jacket and tight jeans on the 800m track. Abby was talking to two racer’s that stayed behind for some extra practice, or rather warning them of the dangers that the night brings, especially with opening and closing anomalies nearby, although she didn’t tell them that last bit. It was nearing nightfall and he could see that the runners had set of again along the track, obviously paying no attention Abby. All was silent and Abby shrugged her shoulders at him from the distance. He felt kind of lonely, all the chairs empty, excluding the one that occupied his jacket, but it gave him a chance to properly reflect on the heavier subjects that had come across the team’s path; Helen, Stephan’s death and Oliver Leek’s betrayal, to name a few.
That’s when he felt breathing hot and damp against the back of his head and in his left ear. All he could do was nothing as a creature of some sort leapt above him and he looked up to see it’s patterned belly. Why had it ignored him and jumped the last few rows in the stadium towards Abby and the Runner’s. Wait, it was heading towards Abby and the runners.
All Nick could do was watch. The runners ran, lungs stretched as well as their legs with their hearts almost bruising the inside of their ribcage’s. One turned back in fear and stumbled and tripped over a loose shoelace on his sneakers. Blood splattered on the white lines of the track, marking them scarlet in the now dark light. His neck was mauled before the creature caught up with the other runner.
Nick looked down in horror and shouted at Abby to run. Now.
