...I have signed up for a ten and a half hour sponsored dance-a-thon. Why yes, that is ten and a half *continuous* hours of ceilidh, salsa, jazz, ballroom, rock'n'roll, hip hop and disco dancing in order to raise money to fit out York Theatre Royal's refurbished event spaces so that they're accessible to all. I think I am going to die.
York Theatre Royal is committed to providing Access for All, and has created a new workshop, Youth Theatre and event space, but we needs to raise £50,000 ensure that these facilities are accessible for wheelchair users, those with physical impairment or anyone who requires the use of push chairs or trolleys for mobility. Consequently they are holding a ten and a half hour sponsored danceathon.
The newly revamped De Grey rooms will be used for:
- Public events and dances in the ballroom
- Youth theatre
- Costume hire
- Workshops
- Community activities
- York Theatre Royal's own wardrobe, education, stage-management and rehearsal spaces
- Adult classes
- Outreach activities
York is a small city and has a lack of dance facilities and spaces such as this that aren't privately owned, extortionately priced gyms. The fact that we're getting some is awesome, and making sure they're accessible to *everyone* would be even more awesome.
If you feel this is a worthwhile cause and would like to sponsor the painful, exhausting and humiliating I have all the grace and co-ordination of an antelope. A 2 minute old baby antelope destruction of my body to music, I've got a just giving page set up
here, and any donations, even tiny ones, would be very very welcome!
