With Thanks and Love

Nov 11, 2008 17:31

Today is Veterans' Day in the US, and I remember observing as a kid by simply thanking my grandfather, an Army National Guard veteran of the North African and Italian theater in WWII.   Usually, I'd bring him a bag of peanut butter cups, his favorite treat, and just say "thanks, Pop."  And he'd smile and chuckle, and give me a peanut butter cup.

It's been seven years since my Pop passed on, and though the pain of his loss is no longer as piercing, I still ache from it all the time, whenever I see the twinkle in his eyes mirrored in my son's, who he never met.

But in honor of my Pop's memory, and in honor of my other Granddad's service as an airman in Korea and Vietnam, I still would like to say Thank You, to all those who have donned uniforms and left their loved ones behind to defend our nation and our way of life.  Thank you for your courage, your honor, and your service to this country, from the bottom of my heart.
